In closing the city schools, recog nition has been taken of a potential menace to the children of Bend in the form of a scarlet fever epidemic. While opinions may vary as to he danger from the disease, the action in protecting the grade pupils from contagion is to be upheld as a "safety first" move. It now rests largely with parents to see that the disease gains no firmer foothold. Strict ob servance of quarantine rules, forbid ding attendance at public gatherings, and careful selection of playmates for the children, are among precautions, the careful observance of which may aid in opening the schools at the be ginning of next week. The report of the Deschutes coun ty food administrator that at least 1000 families have signed up to con serve the nation's supply of food, is encouraging. A complete report will . undoubtedly show an even higher - percentage of domestic patriotism. The Y. M. C. A. has earned the rep utation of being the greatest thing in the soldier's life. Deschutes coun ty will have the chance to help $3000 worth in the next two weeks toward making trench existence endurable. Retail food prices have decreased on an average of 10 per cent since June, says a Washington news dis patch. Seems odd that Bend was passed op."
