Wakefield, Formerly of ltcml, "Writes From Across Ocean Xeel to lienm language That he has been in active service lor the last month in France, is re vealed In a letter reprinted in The Crescent News, received Trom A. N. "Wakefield, formerly associated with Kobert B. Gould in engineering work in this city. After mentioning a pleasant, uneventful voyage across the Atlantic, Mr. Wakefield writes: "Had the pleasure of spending, a lew hours one Sunday in London and 'while I did not get to see but a small portion of ttie city, I enjoyed every minute of the time I was there. Saw Westminster Abbey, the Parliament building, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral. The Strand, Picca dilly and Leicester Square. Also had a feed of "bam and eggs" which is Indeed a treat to us fellows. We are located in a very pretty country which has a very delightful climate so far. It is a good deal similar to the coast, only a little warmer, if anything. This is a great grape country and of course ( wine is pretty cheap as you can get 1 a litre of fairly good claret for 2 francs, or about 37 or 38 cents Amer- ' ican money. Beer costs about 15 cents a bottle for native beer and New York toeer costs about S cents for a small glass, and the boys tell me that whiskey costs 25 cents aj drink, so they stick to the wine and tieer, and most of them are laying! off from that now, as we haven't been paid since July 31, and everyone is broke, but we are all hoping that the "ghost will walk" before the end of the week. "I am trying bard to learn to speak andf understand French as the people are very friendly to us and especially the young Indies and it is rather em barrassing to not be able to talk to or understand them. My vocabulary now consists of a few scattering words, but am picking up a little all the time and if they keep us here long enough may learn to talk a little to them."
