If everv controversy that may arise between the mill companies and their, mnlnvM is spti'.ed in as fair a man- i ner and with the same satisfaction to loth sides as has been the case with this week's local disagreement, Bend should enjoy in the future a measure of industrial peace almost unhoped for. No difficulty is incapable of settlement if those who are concerned n it will meet in a spirit of concilia-1 tion, lay their cards on the table and give and take in an effort to reach a result. Such was the manner in which the strikers' committee and the employ ers have met in the past few days. As a result the men are today back at work feeling better in their minds! than since they began to work here, and the employers are planning for the most efficient operation of their plants, no longer bothered by the bogy of eight-hour agitation. Undoubtedly the eight-hour day Is coming, the Western Pine associa tion is working for its adoption and the end of the war will see a united demand for a national law, but un doubtedly, also, the position of the local mills is right In asking for the national law before putting that time schedule into effect. By their rati fication of the agreement last night their men have assented to the cor rectness of the position. Now to join in and continue to da what we can to hasten the end of the war. THE "BIT" OF THE AVERAGE MAN. He was just an average sort of chap And worked for bis wage each day. He didn't spout and he didn't yap Of his love for the U. S. A. But take it from me, who know him well, He was "there" with the patriot stuff And ready to fight when they rang the bell To call old Kaiser Bill's bluff. When women and children sank at sea. Helpless toll of the U-boat's aim, He muttered an oath that began with D "It's time we were in the game!" Bo he went to the desk where the sergeant sat j And the sergeant perked up brisk, j As he pulled at the bow of bis well worn cap And murmured, "I want to enlist." So they Btripped him down with many i a. aiay And bis chest he began to swell. But the doctor said "his feet's too flat," While Our Patriot said "O hell!" He tried the marines with the samei old luck And the navy refused him too, But still in his heart he was fun of pluck, Though he didn't know what to do. He knew In the draft he wouldn't fit He was over the age, by far And the chance to show his patriot blood Seemed as far as the farthest star But he got his chance the chance of us all when Our Country heeded the dough And the President Bent his clarion call "Buy Liberty Bonds!" you know. Once more the call wide goes country- "Buy Liberty Bonds Invest!" And our Patriot Friend is filled with pride With TWO BUTTONS on his chest. Exchange. Now that tho affair Is over thoro is still tlniB for you to liny your Ltl orty bond. Have you oxt'oeded your quota? Weather still flue. Good rltliens will now IiorIh to think about the coming tux levies. (iciicriil K.lwtrlo Inins that nro Kuunuit !, only 9.1. The Timor To. Adv.
