One of the arguments used against county division was that as soon as the county was divided the people of Bend would want to plunge the coun ty into debt for the erection of a monumental court house here. Some folks even asserted that we had plans all drawn. This, of course, was not true and we trust will not be true. Today Deschutes county officers are established in their new quarters in a private business block. There is none of the waste space found in the ordinary public building. The offices ere business-like, compact and eco nomical. The tax payer who comes in to do county business will find things easily arranged for him. The quarters are ample (or the business of Deschutes county, unless in the case of the court room during circuit court terms, and provide a direct answer to all who may favor a county court house. As yet none have appeared to confirm the sus picions of the anti-divisionists. We trust that none may. Economical administration calls for a continued use of these rooms, or others no more expensive. "Careful Investigation." says a health bulletin, has shown that the physically perfect man Is almost impossible to find. Almost every one who has reach ed the age of thirty has some impair ment or defect of his body. It may be cuch a minor defect as a decayed tooth or a slight digestive disturbance. Or it may be trouble with the kidneys that will develop Into Brigbt's disease if not attended to promptly. Little de fects or impairments. If neglected, may cause untold suffering and loss. "If you have a regular family physi cian arrange with him for a thorough overhauling of your body. This in spection, which should be conducted without clothing, should consist at least of the following: "Height, weight chest and nbdomlnnl measurements and a survey of the general bodily condition. Examination of eyes, ears, nose, throat, mouth, teeth, tongue, skin, glands, lungs, heart, circulation, stomach, liver and other abdominal organs. Examination for evidences of rupture, varicose veins, faulty posture, flat foot, spinal curvnture, deformities and asymme tries. Tests of the vision and hearing. Testa of the brain and nervous system for paresis, locomotor ataxia and other central nervous affections or nervous instability. Chemical and microscopic examination of the urine. Blood pres nure tests. "Such a thorough examination as is suggested here may be the means of prolonging, if not of Buving, life." . THE CAREFUL ELEPHANT. His Bump of Caution Seams to Ba Re markably Well Developed. The author of "From Jungle to Zoo," in explulntiig the dllilcultles of trans porting wild animals by rail, gives a striking example of the elephant's cau tiousness: "The keepers generally place a heavy platform from the door of the truck to the ground, but few elephants will venture on It In one case the men cent in a trained elephant first In the tope that the newly captured elephant would follow. The new elephant stop ped dead, however, threw up bis trunk and made it evident that he would go no farther. "They offered him all kinds of food and .addressed Jilm with epronrajrlng Cobbett and tha Potato. "The other day," says a writer In the American Magazine, "n famous author was telling me how he felt when his first story was accepted. He said that within a few minutes the thought flash ed across his mind that he could not stop, but must go on. One good story must be followed by another and an other and another, else his reputation would die, and he would be humiliated. He said that the feeling was not ex actly comfortable; that the prospect was In a way terrible. 'Being success ful,' he said, 'Is not easy, The suc cessful man advertises to the world thcrt he can do certain things well, and be must go on making good or back off the map. It's a great sensation, a great experience, worth almost any thing, but it Isn't a snap.' "It Is the same way in business.
