"The Crook County Journal can see nothing to rejoice over In the announcement that tho Columbia Southern railroad will advance to Bond next year. It affects to believe that the announcement was designed to stimulate a townslte boom or something else but that thore Is no intention of building a railroad. Tho Priueville Review discusses somo what querrulously the effect the Uend railroad will have on the county seat town. We regret to see such spirit exhibited. Why cannot Prlnovllle re joice with Bend at the rnllroad pros pect? Prinevtlle will not shrink bo cause Bend advances. More and lar ger towns are inevitable as the coun try becomes developed and a neigh borly spirit of helpfulness will bo to the advantage ot all. Bend Is not getting the. railroad to discomfit or annoy her neighbors. We need it In our business and we also need the generous good will ot our county sent. If Prineville were getting one or a dozen railroads Bend would be right glad of It. And she is bound to have a railroad before many years pass." MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1917 What have you done today to help win the war? J WE'RE RIGHT GLAD. I As people reach their dotage they are wont to hark back to the exper iences of their youth. Now, The Bul letin doesn't for a minute admit or maintain that it's approaching a sec ond childhood or that It even is, at the modest age of 14 years, really yet In its prime. But we are getting old enough to look back on the happenings ot our journalistic childhood and to chuckle over some of them. Of course the present personnel of the paper isn't responsible for the things which we of today find in the files of yester day, and that, perhaps, is why they especially appeal to us. Anyway, we have been browsing in the old files recently, and because we think folks In Bend today may be in - terested, now and then, in reading bits from the news of Bend in the early days, we are reprinting a deal of it that seems especially pertinent All of which is by way of intro ducing the below extract, reprinted from The Bulletin's editorial column of Christmas Day, 1903. Just at that time Bend was jubi lant because Mr. Harriman had pub licly promised to build the Columbia Southern railroad to Bend the fol lowing year. And It appears Prine- , ville was a bit crabbed at the pros pect. That railroad didn't materialize for Bend in 1904, but later on one did come from the north. And just now, -when Prineville has actually started a road of her own, the old article seems appropriate. . Here is the 1903 editorial: When Pershing entertained Foln care, Palnleve and Petain the other day some folks may have thought it was a P's conference. Germany may be clover at plant ing her spies all over the world, but we seem to have some little spy sys tem of our own. as wltuess the dis closures regarding the Swedish messages.
