Bend and Deschutes county have received glowing words of praise in the Portland papers 1n the past few days because of the understanding that the county had given its quota to the new National army with no exemptions and no discharges. In other words, that the first 37 men called for examination to fill the county's quota of 37 had been found physically perfect and none had claimed exemptions. We like to hear Bend and Des chutes county praised. The Bulletin from time to time has devoted con siderable space to praise of the sub ject itself, but we do like to see such things based on facts, and when the truth is so far from the printed word as is the case in regard to the local draft it seems most unfortunate. There is bound to be a reaction. And so we have tried to collect the facts and set them forth. The Deschutes county quota on the first call to service under the drpfi law was 37. Not'ces were sent u the Iittt 74 on th? list '.3 present them selves for examination and later. when it appea-t.-.l that the necessary 37 would not be obtained frc.m them, 180 more were cal'.e.l. The figures have not yet been tab ulated, but roughly, the result f the examination Is as follows: Over 100 were found physically unCit and, of the rest who passed physically, mor than 70 filed claims for exemption all of which were allowed. About 40 were not examined here, either because they failed to present them selves for examination or were exam ined elsewhere. The remainder, be ing those who passed physically and made no claim for exemption, hav show in Redmond Sunday evening. The denial of any exemptions by the dis trict board would presumably release some om those now certified for ser vice, as would the receipt of reports of passing from those not yet heard from. That, however, is not the point at present. What we are trying to do here is to give approximately definite facts concerning the draft in the county because we believe it better to have the truth told, however unflattering, than to warm ourselves in praise based on misunderstandings.
