Fred Woelflcn, who tor two years has managed the business department of the paper, has teen accepted for the next Officers' Training camp. We are sory to lose him, just as Bend is sorry to part with such a capable, popular and energetic cit izen, even temporarily. But, despite the inconvenience caused by his loss, .we are glad that he has set a patriotic example. He has done the right thing the thing that younger, un married men, without direct depend ents, should do.' Others in our office have tried fo enlist, and through no fault of their own have been turned down, because they failed to measure up to the physical requirements. Taken all in all. we feel- that our little force is doing its share, and we congratulates "The Bulletin repre sentative" who is going with the colors, and wish him-a world of good fortune. Just as we wish it to the -other young men from Bend who have gone and who will go to fight for world democracy. Duty puts a clear sky over every man. CAN'T JOLLY JOLLY. It may be tulip time in Holland, but it is also "cleanup time' in Cres cent." At least so says Editor T. H. Jolly in the most recent issue of the Crescent News, after publishing the story of the latest developments in the local school scandal. Then the doughty editor continues: "The editor of the News has hppn threatened with eight different kinds I of death if we publish certain things, but what do we care. Every Tom is credited with nine lives, and we have no fear. However, if we should get killed, as advertised, it will be from a wound in the back. Cowards and 'blowhards' never ' bother us. And here we wish to state that T. H. Jolly is editor of the News and personally responsible, for every word published in this paper. . When our enemies think they have a good chance to win out, go to it." r . - ., BETTER SOON. 'Any motorist who can skip over .the first 18 or 20 miles out of Bend on the road to Klamath Falls and still retain an even disposition Is en titled to a gold medal." So says The Oregonion automobile editor, and, as matters stand, he Is pretty nearly correct. But wait until the State Highway Commission has spent that $17,000 on our Bend-La Pine highway! Dun's Review says: "Convincing evidence of the strength of fundamental con ditions during: a time of war readjustments still appears in the insolvency statistics. Notwithstanding the general doubts about impending economic changes, and the hesitancy and waiting In nrany directions, the country's commercial mortality gives not indication of conspicuous unsettlement in business. The number of failures in July, 1137, was less than in any other month this year, excepting April, and the smallest for the period since 1911, while the defaulted Indebtedness was the lightest for July In all years back to 1912, aside from 1916.
