considering a complaint filed by As
toria shipper, the Intertut Cotn
merci) commission ha ruled that
shipments from Astoria to Denver
may properly be routed over the Hill
line by way of Hpokaue, even If such
Khlpiimiila may take from 24 to 86
hour longer than by way of Port
laud and the O.-W. It. & N. and the
Oregon Hliort Line, according to word
received hero from Washington.
The commission holds that wher
ever "no unreasonable delay result"
the road on which business originated
Is entitled to the long haul so that
It may get larger freight revenues
In the cases under discussion lum
ber and salmon shipped from Astoria
over the H. P. c 8. ha been hauled
to Hpokaue on that road and then
transferred to the Darlington for
hauling to Denver, giving the entire
haul to the Hill Interests.
Astoria shipper contended that
tha freight should have been trans
ferred at Portland to the O.-W. R,
& .V, thereby giving a shorter route
to Denver.

While the members of the Des
chutes National ForeBt were congrat
ulatlng themselves on the apparent
let-up in the seriousness of fire con
ditions, five new conflagrations were
reported late yesterday afternoon.
and this morning all but two of the
Bend contingent had left to aid the
worn out rangers and fire guards in
their combat against the flames. Two
of the fires were reported In the Fort
Rock section, while three were from
the Pine Mountain district.
No Information as to origin or ex
tent was given, but It is believed that
lightning must have been the cause,
as practically all the fires started in
places very seldom visited by camp
er. '
