ItiK Hie secret of a brayles mule.
When the Amnricaii puck mule
arrived In France to "do ti In bit" be
of course brought 111" bray with him.
The mulo wtu welcomo, but tlio
bray well, any unusual sound on
a btitllefleld Is undesirable. It
might tip off the Ilocba to a sur-
prUe attack.
In an effort to put an end to the
nlKhtly "love sonic" of the pack mule
the French military officers decided
to separate the sexes, aud all gen
tlemen mules were retained for ser
vice In one sector while all the lady
mules were taken off for service In
a more distant rvitlon.
This produced very marked re
sults. Neverlholeaa there atlll re
mained certain mules who either
from force of habit or from convic
tion that both their love and their
voice were ao strong; that their lady
loves would hear them no matter
how far away, they might be, per
sisted In making the welkin ring
with a gigantic bray just at the time
and place when It would give the
"Borhea" the right cue for sending
In a hall of shells, grenades and rifle
fire. .
' The hablla and temperament of
the mule were then aubjected to
further and more profound atudy
by the French, and this time with
more happy results. It was found
that a very slight operation per
formed on the nostrils of a mule
would render him as silent as a
wrecked phonograph, and since then
the American mulea In the Voages
hnye met all requirement that could

he wanted to be king among the 142-pounde;-s,
Britton hasn't barred any

He met all of them, beginning with
the little fellows and working his

class. The best of them were never
too good for him. He was credited
with being the cleverest lightweight
