! At, the Movies
Grand 'Theatre
The magnitude of Dnvld W. Grlf-
Ilth's feat in staging "The Birth of
' Nation," is - almost appalling at
least to tho (Invoices of the older
forms of theatrical entertainment.
"Where now are tho little groups of
actors, tho pinchbeck scenery and
the potty properties of the so-called
legitimate" . drama? By compart
Ron with tho now art, the "leglti
mate" measures to the mountain like
a molehill. ; Instead of scenery for
his background, Griffith used na
tu io. For subject ho has covered
150 years of American life and his
tory. Eighteen thousand people have
done his bidding and In the hair-
raising rides of the Ku Klux Klau
threo thousand riders and horses
sweep over tho dusty roads.
No wonder that this magnificent
historical spectacle Is the talk of the
country. It has established an en
tirely new art in the realm of the
theatro tho art of pantomimic
screen spectacles with score perfect
ly synchronized to tho action. It has
also created a tremendous sensation
because of its vaster and more force
ful treatment of the theme of Thomas
Dixon's "The Clansman," which both
as book and play created the greatest
furore of the last decade.
Tho great deeds of the Civil War
nd the horrors of reconstruction are
made to live again and the nation
re-born is' opotbesized. Mr. Grif
fith, pioneer among directors, man
aged this stupendous achievement
"without the aid of dialouge or speech,
for motion pictures with music and
effects tell vividly this thrilling tale
of fifty years ago.
The engagement starts on Wed
nesday evening, July 4, and there
will be matinees on Thursday, Fri
day and Saturday at 2:30 p. m.
Evenings at 8:30 sharp. The per
formance lasts three hours.
Edith Storey proves' again in
"Money Magic," the Vitagrapb Blue
Ribbon feature shown at the Grand
Theatre tonight, in which she plays
with Antonio Moreno and William
Duncan, that she is one of the most
versatile players on the beloved
screen.
Her role; 1b that of a young girl
brought up on a ranch who marries a
wealthy miner, also lacking in the
ways of convention and society. The
struggle which she suffers in her
attempt to learn the "whys and
wherefores" In the lives of her cul
tured neighbors is realisticaly por
trayed in a humorous manner, inter
spersed with touches of pathos.
There is no 8ta.r on the screen to
day who could interpret this part
better than does Miss Storey. She
seems to have gotten right into the
spirit of her role and makes it a living
one throughout.
Then as she slowly masters the
thousand 'details for herself she is
thrown into contact with her hus
band's people. They are far more
ignorant than she ever thought of
u'ing, uuu bv mutiny Jar upuu jier,
but, conscious of her own shortcom
ings a few months previous, she
makes an effort to place them at their
ease, and at the same time impart to
them some knowledge of etiquette.
Always famed for her exceptional
versatility, - Edith Storey proves In
this varied, role that she has been
Worthy of any praise ever tfestowed.
