INCREASED LICENSE
LAW NOW IN EFFECT
To Insure Road Construction
Automobilists Should Vote
Fox. Road Bonds.
Many automobile owners are of the
opinion thut the luw Increasing the
license on motor vehicle Is Included
and mude a purt of the $0,000,000 roud
bund bill. In this they ure wrong.
The uutomoblle license was doubled
Ip the motor vehicle luw which was
unnoted by the last Legislature. It Is
now a luw. The Increased auUimobll
license will be In effect and will be
collected regardless of whether or not
the roud bond bill Is upprovud by tbe
voters at the June election.
Furthermore, the motor vehicle luw
contains a provision thut the mouey
raised from automobile licenses shall
bo available for road construction un
der the plan outlined In tbe 19,000,000
roud bond bill If the bond bill carries.
In other words, If the road bond bill
Is defenled, the automobile license
money muy bo used for otber purposes.
If the road bonds are approved, the
automobile owner bus the positive as
surance that the money derived from
the Increased automobile licenses will
be expended In building good roads.
Itemeiaber this: The automobile
owner will have to pay the Increased
license any way, regardless of the tat
of the 16.000,000 road bond bill.
A vote for the roud bond bill by tbe
automobile owner la a vote for tbe
expenditure of the automobile license
money, which has to be paid anyway,
In building a system of stutu-wliln per
manent highways as outlined lu lb'1
road bond bill.
In voting for the road bond bill, the
automobile owner will simply pave thi
way for the expenditure of license
money that be will be required to pay
In building serviceable hard-surfaced
roads In all sections of the stale.
Every automobile owner Is directly
and personally Interested In the-road
bond bill. In voting for that measure
bo will merely be asking that tbe
money bo will bo required to pay any
way shall be spent In building roads.
Tho automobile owner has everything
to gain and nothing to lose by voting
for tbe road bonds.
It Is safe to bet that tbe $6,000,000
state bonding measure will carry four
to one, and that the County bonding
measure will go through with a whoop
for the people of this county are over
whelmingly In favor of a bard surfaced
highway through the county. And why
shouldn't tbey bo In favor of these
measures when tho highway can be
obtained with slate and Federal aid?
Tillumookors know a good thing when
they see It, and no one need bo sur
prised that they are all Jumping op
the right side of the fence. We an
ticipate that those who are opposed to
the bonding the state and tbe county
for good roads will soon be advancing
the argument that we should go slow
on account of tbe war, so as to scar
pcoplo. It will not work, however,
for everybody knows that good roads
are the first step to preparedness.
Tillamook Herald.
Every automobile owner should vota
for tbe (6,000.000 road bond bill. The
license on all motor vehicles has been
doubled by a law passed at tbe last
Legislature and will have to be paid
anyway. If the road bond bill carries
at the June election, the money raised
from automobile licenses will be ex
pended In building good roads. If tbe
bond bill Is defeated, the money raised
from automobile licenses may be ex
pended for other purposes. For the
very same reason those who do not
own an automobile should vote fo;
the road bond bill. In doing so, tbey
will Insure the expenditure of tbe
automobile license money In road
building without adding one cent to
tboir taxes,
Mr. Automobile Owner: Your li
cense waa doubled by the last Legis
lature. You will bave to pay the in
creased license no matter what be
comes of the 16,000,000 road bond bill
at the special election In June. If the
road bond bill carries, however, the
money raised from automobile licensee
will bo expended In road building
Why not vote for the bond bill and
get some good roads?
SOME REA80NS FOR
FAVORING ROAD BONDS
Vote "Yes" on the 6,000,000
road bond bill at tho special
eloctlon June 4th.
Because Oregon needs good
roads.
Because a dollar's worth of 4
road Is assured from every dol-
lar expended.-
Beeauss every favorable vote
Is a vote to help pull Oregon 4
out of the mud.
Beeauie the state Is now
spending 14,000,000 annually.
without getting adequate re-
aulta.
Because all sections of the
state will benefit directly from
the roads to be constructed.
Beeause good roads Increase
real estato vaJues both In the
city and throughout the state.
' Because proposed bond issue
will provide good roads at no
greater cost than state is now
paying for poor ones.
BECAUSE! GENERAL TAXES
WILL. NOT BE INCREASED.

STRATEGY OF THE BOER.
Ds Wet's Clever Escape Whin Himmld

Or tbe three greut figures that emerg

was the most Impressive. Ills face was

schemes of escape, almost miraculous
In tbelr cunning, tbat perplexed an em
pire and puzzled a planet.
One evening after a long day's march
so be told us all bis wanderings
seemed to bave come to an end. Tbe
lights of the British bivouac fires twin
kled from every point of tbe horizon.
De Wet, as was bis wont, went apart
from bis men and sat alone In dumb
despair. Then there came to blm soft
ly one of those wonderful scouts wbo
served blm so well. Tbe scout bud dis
covered a slight gap In tbe British
Hues between two regiments that were
not quite keeping touch.
In a moment De Wet was on bis
feet. Wltblu an bour every burse's
foot was muffled with clotb or wool
and every wagon wheel was swathed.
Tbe Boer campllres weie lighted and
were left burning brightly. Then tbe
whole Boer force crept out through tbe
darkness of tbe night In utter silence.
penetrated the gap lu the British lines
and started on a new course of fugi
tive warfare.
