Under the direction of . Nebraska agricul tural experts, formers of Nebraska today are fighting' for the greatest corn and barley crops ever grown in the state. Balked in their efforts tor "bumper wheat' crops because winter "wheat was killed and plowed up. the state is planning to do its share of the national food mobilization cam paign through new planting gand in--Increaae of acreage.. Barley will be 'practically a new problem for most Nebraska farmers, as it has been grown but little, in the past, though the climate is admirably suited for it. COUNCIL CONSIDERS SIDEWALK MATTER (Contributed.) At a special meeting of the com mon council held late yesterday after noon, the city attorney was directed to make a brief statement for pub lication, in defense of the proposed amendment to the city charter, im posing liability on abutting owners tor injuries arising from defective 'sidewalks. The oouncil felt that such a statement should be made in Its defense, in view of the strong opposition that has arison in some quarters to the measure. A num ber of cities in Oregon haVe a similar provision, among them Corvallis. As the law exists, the city Is liable for, injuries arising from the defective condition of sidewalks, and so every taxpayer,' no natter how well he eepB his own sidewiiks in condition, must help pay the damages arising from the neglect of his neighbor, in that respect. . The abutting owner is lin a position to know the actual con dition of his sidewalk at any time better than anyone else can. The non-resident owner should be "represented by an agent in the care Of hiB property; at any rate, the dil igent resident owner should not be taxed to pay for the negligence of C. S. HUDSON, President U. C. COE, Vice President E. A. BATHER, Vice President. The First National Bank OF BEND, BEND OREGON. War Financing Inventory of the nation's assets for perparedness has dis closed only one satisfactory item. The financial system is competent and the banks art . ready. There are no soldiers, but there Is great wealth. There is a shortage of guns, but a surplus of dollurs. Ships must be built in the navy, but the banks are in commission. THE MILITARY SYSTEM MUST BE RECONSTRUCTED, BUT THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM IS WORK ING. Men must be trained for the army, but the men who handle finances are already skilled. THIS BANK IS A MEMBER OF THE FEDERAL RE SERVE SYSTEM.
