fAGB I THK BKN'D HULMCTIX, DAILY EDITION, ItKNTt, ORFdON, Tl'KHDAY, APRIL 8, 10IT American Ambulance Corps Wins Fame in The Balkans lly Williur 8. Forrest, (United Prau SUIT CornMpondmt.) PARIS, April 3. A little band of American college men Is making a name tor America In the Balkans to day. This band . Is composed of more thnn 50 young Americans who sailed tor France about a ycur ago to be come ambulance drivers tor the American Ambulance Field service, under the direction ot A. Piatt An drew, ot La Porte, lml., and Glouces ter, Mass., former assistant secretary of the U. S. Treasury. Two sections of ambulances In ad dition to many others now working nn the western tront are with the French armies in the Monasttr region of reconquered southern Servia. Carrying . wounded, always at night, ovor wild roads, through the rocky mountain passes and over mountains, la only part ot the work these American collegians are do ing, according to Emiis Brown, ot Charleston, S. C who has just reached Paris on his way back to America. Brown joined the ambu lance service while a student at Virginia University. He is the first American to return since the Amer icans embarked at Marseilles for Sa lonica. "For months since our Allies took Monastlr our ambulances have been very busy in the Balkans," Brown told the United Press today. "From our headquarters near Monastlr we have carried the wounded from the trenches north of Monastir, from Ko rltxa to the west, where the French blesses come from the front lines by mule back over the mountains and from other points wherever we are directed by the French military au thorities. Sometimes it has been necessary to use good strong Amer ican arm work to pull even our light American cars over the difficult roads. PRIXEVILL,K, MADRAS-CULVER BEND AND SHEVLIX-HIXOX FORM ORGANIZATION MAUR ICE CASHMAN HEADS LEAGUE. The Central Oregon'. Baseball League, to be made up of teams rep resenting Prineville, Madras-Culver, Bend and The Shevlln-Hixon Com pany, was definitely organized last ngiht at a meeting at the' Emblem club, with representatives from each of the towns present. Maurice Cashman, ot . the Bend team, was Belocted president of the league; U. H. Irving, of Madras, vice president; J. O. Pearce, Culver, sec retary, and E. F. Albee, Prineville, treasurer. The board of directors will comprise Maurice . Cashman, J. O. Pearce, Frank R. Prince, F. E. Albee and L. H. Irving. An honor ary board of directors was selected with power to vote, comprising the following men: O. A. Pearce, Mad ras; C. S. Hudson, Bend; T. A. Mc Cann, Bend;" E; J. Kingsley, Cul ver; T. M.' Baldwin, Prineville. That a four team league would be a more feasible undertaking than a six team organization, brought to a conclusion a consolidation of the Madras-Cnlver teams which will play under a Jefferson county head with games alternately played at Madras and Culver. This consolidation it was thought by the representatives of Madras and Culver would work to a better financial advantage and would enable the two towns to. pro duce a faster organization than by working separately. The league directors will meet again within the next week, each rep resentative.. q present a tentative schedule for-the summer baseballe schedule from which the definite schedule for the ' summer baseball C. S. HUDSON, President U. C. COE. Vice President E. A. 8ATHER, Vice President. CENTRAL OREGON LEAGUE FORMED The First National Bank OF BEND, BEND OREGON. 'It's a Mighty Comfortable feeling to know, that In addition to the large resources of this Bank, that at any time wo can send Ten Thousand to Two Hundred Thousand Dollars In notes due this Bank, to the Federal Reserve Bank, at Nan Francisco, Calif., and receive either currency or credit for (he same. ' Customers doing business with this Bank enjoy this ad ditional security, which la of almost inestimable value. "To give somo sort ot an Idea what the wounded are. going through, It is sometimes 15 days before a man reaches a good comfortable hospital after he is wounded on the trout lino west of Korttia. Our ambulances can only penetrate as far as Korltsa. Here we take aboard men who linvo travelled for days on mule back. We then rush them as fast as pos sible toward comfort in the nearest thing to a mule than can be found in the Balkans our little Detroit ambulauces. "Sometimes the American drivers take their cars almost to the tront trenches north ot Monastlr. . Usual ly, however, we can pick up a load in the town itself. "All .drivers are armed with re volvers now on account of the Turk ish and Bulgar comitadjis, who have not use tor Amoricans. Several drivers, including John Imlirey, ot Washington, D. C, have had ad ventures with them, but luckily so far no one has been hurt." When Brown left tho Balkans seven cars of the two suctions had been smashed by shells, four of them beyond repair. Among the members ot his section were Arthur Blumcn thal. ot Wilmington, X. C, famous football star at Princeton in 1913; Lovering Hill, New York City, for mer Harvard student; Powell Ken ton. Philadelphia, of the University of Pennsylvania; Charles Balrd, of New York City, and many others, mostly Harvard students. Before Brown went to the Balkans he had.drvlen an American ambu lance through the big attack at Ver dun last year. The termination of his six months' enlistment and 111 health caused him to leave for home. Despite finding himself on a ship en route which was the victim of a sub marine In the Mediterranean, Brown reached Toulon and Paris in safety. will be worked out, and the selection of umpires made and financial ar rangements for games. It is the desire of the league to offer Central Oregon the best calibre ot baseball It has ever had and offer a dependable schedule ot games tor the season. DULUTH AGAIN VOTES ON PROHIBITION (By United PrtM to the Bend Bulletin) DULUTH, Minn., April 3. This city, which was voted dry one year ago, but which is said to be really wet yet, today took another voto to see whether It is wet or dry. It's mind isn't fully made up on the sub ject'. Following the finding of the city to be dry by last year's election, the charter provisions were injected into the situation, which kept the city wet until July 1. In the meantime the wets had the issue placed upon the ballot this year to see whether this wet city remains wet or this dry city remains dry. Trespass notices for sale at the Bulletin office.
