EDUCATORS GATHER
FOR N. E. A. MEETING

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 24.
School men and ma'ms from every
section of the United States were ar
riving here today to attend the Na
tional Education association conven
tion to be held here beginning Mon
day, February 2$, and closing on
March 3.
"There will be from six to eight
thousand teachers here next week,"
Otto F. Dubach, Kansas City school
man in charge of hotel arrange
ments, declared today. "We are do
ing the best we can to make them
comfortable."
What is said to be the headliner
of the convention will be the meet
ings of the department of superin
tendence, which will give particular
attention to the stronger foundation
for, and a better command of, spok
en and written English.

LINERS IN COLLISION
Northland and Senator Badly Dam
aged. Passengers Safe.

SEATTLE, Feb. 24. The Pacific
Coast Steamship company's liners,
Northland and Senator, collided off
Eureka early this morning. There
were no casualties. The Northland
was bound for the north, but was
forced to return to San Francisco
for repairs.
.The Senator was badly damaged
above the water line. Both had full
passenger lists.
SNOW HITS PORTLAND

PORTLAND, Feb. 24. All ship
yards here are closed, and snow has
stopped logging operations. Sawmills
are working under difficulties. The
weather forecaster stated that Port
land's February snow is the heaviest
since 1893, totalling 12 and one-half
Inches.

The marriage of Miss Lela Joseph
and J. J. Schwendker, of Wellsvillo,
Mo., will take place Sunday at the
Methodist chuch In Portland in the
presence of relatives and a few close
friendB. After the honeymoon,
during which they will visit St. Louis,
the young couple will make their
home in Wellsville, where Mr.
Schwendker is in business.
Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Smith and son
Calvin accompanied Miss Joseph,
Mrs. Smith's daughter, to Portland
and are remaining over for the wed
ding.

CHICAGO, Feb. 24. The first
American factory for the manufac
ture of "artificial coal" in commer
cial quantities may be erected In
Chicago, members of the Chicago
Renting Agents' asscolation said to
day. A committee appointed by the as
sociation to seek a solution of the
fuel famine niennco which has threat
ened this and other cities all winter,
has reported that they have a form
ula for manufacturing "coal substi
tute" from tar, chemicals, and by
products, at a cost far below that of
coal.
The committee's report shows that
tests which they have made, show
the artificial product to be higher
in heating units and more efficient
generally than the mined product.
