All these successes liuvo been based

A potato should be larded before be

necessnry to rover ouly the sklu with
little lard, bacon grease or butter to
act-omplhib the end.
A potato so treated and baked just

A POSER FOR THE JUDGE.
The Wsy the Aoeused Put the Case Up
to the Court.
Writing of Polish lemperuiiieut and
talent, Kidney Wlillmuii In "Things I
Iteiiieuiber" bus uu mousing slory of a
bright Polish Jew who traded III
chcmli'uls. Ho was brought before Ilia
luw courts for selling poison without
fulfilling the legal enactments bearing
on sorb tmiisiii-tloiis.
Tlm magistrate proceeded to read
out tlio chiirgu when Hie Jew sudden
ly Interrupted bliu with the question:
"Kxi'iisii me, Mr. President. Do you
understand anything about cut-mi-culsV"
".Mr. H., Hie export, Is here In that
cspurlly," replied I he Judge.
"And you, Mr, H" queried the Jew,
"do you understand anything about
law'"
"You have just heard from bis
worship that I am an expert In chem
icals. If you want to know anything
about luw please address yourself to
the Judge."
"I ask you, Mr. President, Just to
consider tbe case for one moment.
You aro tbe judge of tbe court and ad
mit that you do not understand auy
thlng about chemicals, and the expert
tells us that be does not know any
thing about law. And I, a poor Jew,
am expected to be familiar both with
tho law and with chemicals. Now,
Mr. President, 1 ask you bow you can
possibly convict me?"

Hew Airmen Measure the Heights to
Which They Ascend.
Altimeters or barographs aro used by
aviators to measure tho belghts to
which they ascend. Both of tbeso In
struments are constructed on exactly
the same principle as tho aneroid ba
rometer. They depend upon air pres
sure. At sea level, where the air Is
much compressed by Its own weight,
tbe pressure Is about fifteen pounds to
the aijuaro Inch, but at greater heights
It liecomes less. The barometer Is gov
erned by tbe pressure and so Indicates
the height above sea level.
Thero are ninny forms of barometers.
The simplest Is a bent tube of glass,
shaped like a very long letter J and
partly filled with mercury. The upper
part la closed, and tbe space ubove the
column of mercury Is a vnrunm. The
lower or book end of the tnlw la open
and subject to the pressure of tbe at
mosphere. As tho pressure becouies
less ou rising above the surface, the
mercury In the long pnrt of the tuba
fulls. Tbe extent of the fall indicates
tho height.
Airplanes use one of these Instru
ments mentioned, which are practically
aelf registering barometers, and wlieu
