It was placed in the beleaguered state un
der the new "silent sentinel" campaign
begun by the Congressional Union For
Woman Suffrage a an outgrowth of the
failure of President Wilson to declare In
favor of the proposed federal surf rage
amendment when he received a delega
tion of 300 suffragist leaders at the White
first guard mount of the suffrage
sentinels marched across historic Lafay
ette square a few minutes before o'clock
In the morning, under command of Miss
Mabel Vernon. The detail consisted of
six young women. The sei-cranl of the
guurd for Its first day of picketing was
Miss Mnry Oertrutlo Kendall of Halllmore.
Twenty-four suffragist, besides the offi
cer of the day and the sergeant of the
guard, were utilized. Twelve were on pick
et duty In the morning and (he others In
the afternoon. 8IX were stationed at each
of the two main gateways east and west
from which the semicircular roadway
leads to the main enlrnnce to the White
House. Each of the sentinels carried a
banner. Two banners of yellow bunting
at each gate were Inscribed with the
words, "Mr. President. What Will You Do
For Woman Suffrage?" Flanking each of
these bunners were (wo others, displaying
the sunrage rolora purple, while and yai
iowbu( bearing no Inscriptions.
President Wilson was one of the first to
enter the western gale after the sentinels
went to their poata. He was returning In
a sedan motorcar at 10 o'clock from a
game of golf and seemingly Ignored the
presence of the pickets when he pasaeil
them. One of the eenttnela. when aaktd
whether the president amlled as lie passed
thrnush the gate, replied:
"Not so that you could notice It. He
was ulterly oblivious, apparently, of our
presence here."
20 YEAR OLD PUZZLE to England to face what might mean
aisnonorapie death.
Virile and erect at 40 when he
fled from Aldershot, Greener is in
the 60s today, but still erect and sol

and there are lines in his face. He
wears the simple uniform of the
Sappers and is soon destined for
his further "comeback" In northern

. LONDON, Jan. 20. Disappear
ance from the army under a cloud, 21
years a' "mystery man" in South
America and now ancient British
court records are skeins revealed to
day in the story of the man who came
back. .
Friends of Sergeant Major Green
er, Royal Engineers, have just learn
ed the whole truth in connection with
Greener's sudden leave from his bat
talion headquarters at Aldershot in
1895.
The irresistible lure of the great
war which called the deserter from
a remote part of Chile, caused him
to appear before a courtmafHlal again
at Aldershot, just 21 years and three
days after he was officially reported
missing -on the barracks room bul
letin board. Desertion usually means
death but this courtmartial had only
the heart to reduce Its victim to the
rank of private.
- In his isolated rendezvous the tales
of European battlefields reached the
deserter and the call of the army
was overpowering. It drew him back
angs by Mrs. S. B. Graham and Mrs.
Louis Bennett wero greatly enjoyed.
As a feature of the evening, was
the .roll call, each guest giving his
or her name, former residence, and
time ot coming to Bend.
