SATURDAY EVEJUXG, JUNE 1, 1866.
Go and hear Gov Gibbs aud Col. Hawkins
this evening. ' - : v I
We notice quite a number of onr countVjr
frfenda in town to-dfty, who have come in to
listen to the speakers Ibis evening.
. . :
. Capt. Lafollet's Company of the 1st Ore
gon Infantry, will be here tomorrow-afternoon,
from Camp Polk.. .
Whoisvsb votes for James DT Fay votes for
a secessionist, who be. ieves in. the divine
right" or any .State to break up the Union.
Tub wharf boat of ih 0. S. N. Company
was yesterday towed to opposite Mr. Fitzger
ald's store, where the steamer will land dur
ing high water..
A osntlkman who, ar ired'from Umatilla
last evening, informs us that the Union ticket
in that county will be oloeted by a handsome
majority.
Tub Canyon City stage hrfs not yet ar
rived, although now over line three days.
It is (cured that some Indian difficulties hare
tirovented it from making its regular tlmo.
Votb the whole Union ticket. Do not
scratch a name. Do not swap off with Dem
ocrats. Be vigilant and the day is sure to be
carried for the Union ticket,
The Amador Dispatch, a leading Democralio
paper in California, hoists the name of Gen.
U, E. Lee tor'Preeident of the United States.
That is true Democracy..
I.AW1E numbeis of petitions, numerously
signed, are daily being received by members
of Congress from parties in the West, pray
ing for protection on wool.
Tug Harysville-jKrprMS publishes and en
dorses a Secession Democratic poem, "We're
glorious in' the duet." Swine-could sing the
name song witn xne same gusto.
If you think of voting for Lafayette Lane,
remomber that in his speeches through the
State be has declared his willingness to ad
rait intyCongress Jeff. Davis or any other
rebel who can show a regular certificate of-
election.
REueMBKit'tbat every vote east for the Dem
ocratic ticket is one for Jo Lane. The Demo-
orast west of the mountains inland to run
liim for the United States Senate, and should
tlicy get a majority of the Legislature will
elect him. : Do the people of the Dalles want
the eld traitor for United States Senator T If
not, vote the Union ticket.
Toe North Carolina papers are full of state
meats going to show that plantations in that
e'ectlou are being rapidly bought op by North.
oroei'B. A Jerseyman (recently purchased
twelve hundred acres in Wadesboro, North
Carolina' at eloven dollars per acre. A New
' York company ate on the point of taking ten
thousand acres in the eame State, on which
tboy will settle English emigrants.
Every Demoerat elected to the Legislature
is a sure vote for Jo. Lane for United States
Senator. Old Jo. Lane is the man who stood
np in the United States Senate and defendei
the treason of the seceding States, and de
dared that Jeff. Davis was " one of thebrav
est and purest of patriots." Remember
voters, that every ballot for a Democrat is
ote tt ratify Jo. Lane's treasonable utter-
ancoo in tuo Senate.
Many Southern journals defend the Civil
Uiglits Bill as an eminently just and proper
tme. The Chatanooga American Union says
' No enndid person can deny that the object
of the X3 ill which both houses- of Cungres
run p, by. an overwhelming vdte, just passed
over the President's veto,, is right and just

V TH'KD'KMjQCRATIC party.
'The De'mborntic party of to-day presents a
striking contrast with the Democratio party
of fortner times.. Once, the very name of
DimlVcraiy was the synonym of strength,
grtnss. gfory and victoiy. It was sup
posed to embody those great principles of
Republican government which held that the
peo'ple'are sovereign, and that the majority
should rule.
Its leaders were honored and respected in
the persons of Jefferson, Jackson and Van
Buren. They showed their devotion to the
Interests and prosperity of the cfiuntry, b
maintaining the Union and the honor of our
But now bow changed. Those old
leaders, whose very names were a tower of
strength, have deparied,'tbeir nuns have set
to rise no more. The once solid phalanx of
the Democ acy is broken, routed and dis
pensed,, and the party has sunk to a feeble
nd contemptible minority, with none so
poor to do it bomHge It became tbe special
dvocnte, delender and propagator of slavery
and the slave oligarchy, and the bitter and
ui relenting foe of. freedom, education, law
and Union. Its complicity with treason aud
traitors caused it downfall, and has so
stamped it with ignominy and di-grace as 10
prevent It from ever recovering its former
power and prestige.
With slavery died the Democrat c party,
and the world rejoices at it with inexpressi
ble joy. Upon its ruins arose tbe young,
igorous, and all conquering Union party,
and by its almost superhuman efforts pre
served tbe Republic and the Constitution
and Union our fathers gave a. When the
lives, liberty and pro peiity of thirty mil
lions of people were jeopardized, and the
nation's life was trembling in tbe balance,
who came to tbe rescue? It was not the
Democratic party. From the commencement
of tho war for the Union to its conclusion,
that party threw every obstacle in 'the way
pf the Government.- U opposed the appro
priation of' means to carry on the war, dis
couraged enlisic.ent?, excited riots and blood
shed, and resisted the draft. It pandered to
the South, coaxed, begged and 'entreated tbe
conspirators to return to the Union, but was
answered by. insult and injury. It assailed
the President with tbe grossest abuse and
vituperation, accused "him of perjury, tyran
ny, and every possible enormity, and re
joiced over the-tragio circumstances of bis
assas8lnatloir;-butfor'tbe people who were
seeking to break up tbe Union, usurping
power, and carrying fire and swot d through
out the land, it had no words of condemna
tion to utter..
When the Democracy refined to support)
their government and follow citizens against
such unprovoked wrongs and cruelties, nd
even openly professed sympathy witb the
rebel hordes, . it not only became false to
friends, State -and Nation, but false to lib.
orty, to law, to the Cotstltution and to God
It was charged -that it was an abolition war
gotten np by northern fanatics, for the ben
efit of the nogro, but tbe charge was fcrse
Encouraged, if net instigated by such Dem
oeratie luminaries as Ex-President Plerbe, of
N. H-, Seymour, of N. Y., Vallandighamof
Ohio; and the old Publio Functionary, of
Pa., the Southern Democracy undertook the
overthrow of the very best Government
known on earth, and chose tbe sword as
arbiter.
If five hundred thousand Americans now
sleep in bloody gravest the Democratic party
is responsible for it: If tbe whole country
has beon draped in mourning; the same party
was the cause of itl Alt out national trou
b!es,our heavy tuxes, our losses, are traceable-directly
to that' wicked, unscrupulous
and now demoralized party. And yet, with
such a record, it has tbo brazen effrontery
to call itself the Union party, par excellence,
and contemplates' carrying the State at the
coming election. '
The party that stood by tbo country during
the war is fully competent to manage its af
fairs in time of peace The loyal masses
will be slow to surrender tbe control of the
Government its honor, prosperity, great
ness, glory and grandeur to that party that
would not " vote a man or a dollar."
