Indians in Montana.- A letter
from Sun River, April 22. to the Ra
diator says :
While Nicola9 Schern wasobopping
wood in front of the farm house, he
saw some ten Indians running down
the river, in the rear of the building.
Ho immediately Tan into the house to
inform Ed, Huffman, alias Littlo Tex. ;
but Tox had gono lor water; ho then
ran up the ladder leading to the top
of the houso, and saw Tex running
down the river, and tho Indians close
behind him. The Indians commenced
firing ; Tox whoolcd and fired, and
then fell. Aftor they had fired sever,
nl more shots, they scalped und strip
ped him. Nicholas Seliorn then fast
ened the doors and opened tho port
'holes of the houso'; but, there being
liotio in the rear, he could not sco what
was going onln that direction. About
this time, n party came in front of the
house, somo- threo hundred yards dis
tant, and commenced shaking Tex's
Santa and scalp, and hallooing Wo
aw 1 Gee ! &o. They then moved
around to tho roar of tho house, and
built a largo firo. Nick noticed a
Bmoko in the rear building; and, the
wind blowing strong from that direc
tion, the firo spread rapidly, and tfaa
other buildings were soon in flames,
the firo bursting into the room where
Mr. Schcrn was. Ilo then went up
stairs and jumped out oi the window.
At tho instant ho jumped out of tho
window, a case of howitzer ummuni.
tion, which was over the hall, explod
ed, making a tremendous report, and
filling the air with smoke and dirt from
tho roof. Amid the smoke and confu
sion, Mr; Schorn escaped to the brush
undiscovered; he followed down the
river about two milos, crossed, and
made for tho Mission ; but boing un
ncquaintod with the country, got lost,
lie finally struck the Benton road, and
on tho third day, reached the Dear
born ranch, almost exhausted with
hunger and fatigue.
The Conciliation Policy. A"Bos
tfrnian" writes froit Charleston, S. C,
to tho Boston Journal as follows :
lioloro leaving home 1 was strongly
inclined to criliciso and blamo the pol1
icy of the Government for pardoning
so many " big liebels," tho more
wealthy citizens who had taken nn'nc
tive part in tho war. I am now in
clined to think that policy a good one.
I could namo 6omo prominent individ
uals of that class, talented, wealthy
und Influential, whoso inuuence upon
the people is, I am now sulisfiod, most
palutatory. Conciliation must begin
somowhero.. It is utter nonsenso to
stand aloof, bad as theso people have
boon, and attempt to grind them to
finer powder. J hoy have already
suffered, and suffered terribly, for
their folly, and they sco and acknowU
edgo It. Very few ludics one meets
in tho street are without mourning.
Very few familioa kro to bo iound that
bavo not boon sadly afflicted, to say
nothing of the wido-Bprcad financial
ruin throughout the Southorn country.
