Narrow Escape. An incident
which nearly cost Ex-Senator and fix-
iQbo William m. uwm bis lite, -oc-
enrred recently in Fort Jackson, where
the distinguished rebel is incarcerated.
Tho Doctor is a fertile writer, and has
his materials in one of his casemates.
Up and down the gallery opposite his
retreat constantly marches an African
sentinel, whoso duty it is "to see that
the roynl prisoner does not escape.
While the Doctor was busily employed
no day, a gust of wind curried off a
sheet of bis manuscript. Instantly he
dashed by tho black guard in pursuit
of it. The son of Congo, without a
moment's hesitation, leveled his muss
ket and pulled the trigger. Tho cap
did not explode, and at last accounts
the doughty lriend of Maximilliun
still lived.
, Southern Crops and Labor. A
correspondent of the New 5fork Times
from Wilmington, North. Carolina,
writes:
The rice plantations. and turpentine
on the Cape Fear will nearly all be
worked this year, most of them hav.
ing been rented by Northerners. Some
of them aro the most valuable in the
South. So far as I have been able to
learn, the ft'eodmen engaged on them
are behaving themselves extraordina
rily well, and are quite contented.
Most of the old overseers on the plan
tations have been retained by the
lessees, and, strange as it may seom,
the blacks prefer them to Northerners.
They tell me that tho Yankees work
them too hard, which, I suppose, is a
sufficient 'canon.
