TUffiiSOSARLH ORGANIZATION ISC
I.1IVJIVT COUNTY.
UK AD RKAD 1 READ I
The following letter, divulging the plans
nd purposes of tlietro isonnblo organization
which the Democrats maintained during the
war in Linn county, is published in the Al
bany Journal, of the 18th inst. The writer
is well known. throughout the State, and has
a reputation for honesty and veracity :
Albany, May 16th, 1808.
It Is with deep feelings of duty that I owe
to myself, my cotin'ry, and my Orel, that I
pen tiieso lines for. publication. I have been
frequent y inquired of to know ihe reason
why I loft the so-called Democratic par y ;
and that all may know my rca-ons, I hore
solemnly declare that I left that party bo.
..bauso I bc-nrne convinced by proof, iindcni
blo : t'nit . its leaders were "men w'io are in
favor of the South, and Enemies to tho Gov
ernment'. Tbev sny this is not so. I say
that know il to be o, I have kept the means
rof my knowledge to my elf, but I can keep
it tin Inniri'l- ! an( t.h illrrli 1 r ia n hanvw fnab-

"ral o tlicir can li latea speak who profess

eoyed into that meeting by men whom I
. thoug it honest, and frj mi Is of -pur Govern

now brought out as a candidate for the Leg
islature, one of their " officers" who held

but I do know that the object of said organization-

when that oath would bind me to bold mv

stroy our country, for they did no1 instruct me
- to res st i ho draft, and if I should be drafted
bow to let their friendi of the rebel army know
l was tneir tnen I so tnat 1 need not tear tuem
or they me. To make me feel safe and be
lieve that tho South could never be whipped
- they said that tho Norttiern armies were
composed of men who would betray their
country. They cited. me to some battles
whero whole regiments of Federal soldiers
had been taken prisoners by a few rebels,
aud said it was done by the Northern men
giving the rebels a secret sUn, which they
snowed me bow to give. I have said the
object of this organization was to destroy
our cou; try. Is it not true? when these
very men who now profess to love their coun-
" try, were, during the war, here in Oregon,
holding se ret moetings to learn men bow to
betray their country 1 What hypocrisy I I

pqwor. I may make enemies, but I will do

' know that I need try to give them all, as I
was never instructed in giving them bnt
onco. Suffice it, for the present, to say that
they have signs by which they, recognize
eaob other. They drop pieces of paper upon
which are written cerUin' characters on the
,nide walk and other public- places, to give
rt alarm and bo ready for any emergency;
When in the army, they are to bite off their
cartridges, let tho ball fall to the ground,
and give their ramfod a certain flourish;
- then run down the powder without the ball,
then bold their guns across the left wrist so
that their friends may know who. they are.
, When I say their friends I mean the rebel
army for loyal men would out understand
tlioir Bigns. Such are the men who nre run,
oing for office pa the Democratic ticket, pro
fessing love (or tneir country. Oh, what
Jove I I-mako these statements in lull view
of the responsibility I' incur, believing that
some, bonec-t Democrats will see with whom
they are associating, and for whom they are
