on which to erect the necessary build1

nuking that a survey of it be made,
and the title to it be properly proved
up. This, we believe, has boon. done.
We have always contended that tbo
Dalles was the most available point
for a mint it ono was to be established
norlb of Sun Francisco; because, to
locate it at Portland would be to take
it an unnecessary distance from the
mines, and to pfoco it at Idaho- would
pjaco it out of the way of the Casyon
City and upriver gold yielding rot
gions; moreover,, we believe that we
lave every reason to anticipate fresh
and rich tiiscovories throughout the
whole circle of country to which- the
Dulles is the natural centre. If there
is any action which our citizens can
take at the present status of the ques
tion, let it be dono at once. A grain
may turn, tho scale in our favor, and
cur local prosperity bo made certain.

we are enabled to lay before oui rend
ers a dsscription of this routo, com
mencing at a point on tbo river, twoii-
ty-fivo miles below the lake, and
thonco up the luke and river to the
flat Head and Bitter lioot Kivers;
nd Ihonce. up the Flat Head to the
mouth- ot the Jocko, a distance alto
gether of over two hundred miles.
Mr. . Abrams arrived at the ferry,
twenty five miles Uolow tbo Lake, on
the 12th of March, where ho was de
tained until the 20th, waiting for a
suitable boat to be built for tho trip
p the river. Arrived at the Cabinet,
distance of oightyitive roi I ok, over a
route of unsurpassed beauty, free from
all obstructions. Hero the river is
forced through a channel of about 150
feet in width, with pcndicular rock on
either side 100 feet or more in height,
for a distance of one hundred yards,
which presents n barrier to steamboat
avigalion during high water, but at
tho present low stage found no diffi.

boat navigation, for a distance of forty
fiwo miles, when we come to tho Fulls
of Thompson's Frairie, and tho upper
end of tho boat route. Here a portage
of loss than threo-fourths of a mile
over an easy grade, without timber,
becomes necessary.
Then tho party' cam to a river,
though' rapid, susceptible ef steam
boat navigation for a distance of 75 or
eighty miles, to tho mouth of tbo
Jocko river, through a country, a large
portion of which is well adapted to
cultivation and stock raising.

McFurlond, JSudio, JSSarlicv and others,
on their way to the mines, fiJty fivo
miles this side of Thompson's Prairie;

off by the Indians, between White
