GOLD BKATIXG.
t)f this wonderful business, so ex
tcnsivoly manipulated in Now York,
ibis en id tbut until recently, the art
vvus scarcely practisod in this country.
hut is wonderful about it is that a
ninglo grain ot gold may bo beaton by
i ho hammer eo as to cover seventy
five square inches, which would loavo
it loss than the 350,000th part of an
inch in thickness) or requiring more
than a million sheets to make n pile
three inches high. This would be
nbout ;be 1 200ih part of tho thickness
of common printing paper, and is ow
ing to the oxtremo tenacity of gold.
A pound of gold may bo drawn into
a wire that would reach around the
globe. A silver wiro coated with the
thinnest wash of gold may be drawn
id an indefinite extent without break
ing tho coaling so much that it could
ho discovered, even with a microscope.
The gold which is used for boating is
vory slightly alloyod with silver and
copper, unless the leaf is to be ex
posed to the weather, when pure gold
U used. It is first melted into an in
got, loog and narrow, which on being
tooled, ia paused through polished
stool rollers until it is reduced to a
narrow ribbon about one 800th of an
inch in thickness. -It then passes into
ilio hands of the bcator. Tho gold
ribbon is cut into pieces of an inch
nquuro, and 150 of those are plucod
hutweon as many sheets of tho vellum,
nl .'.ornately, when the beater lays on
with his hftavy hammer, beating the
pilo about an hour, Gist with one hand
and then with tho other, shifting the
hammer without any pauso. and very
liofily turning the book over or from
side to side, between tho blows. By
this limo tho pieces of gold will have
expanded to tho size of the vellum,
Mrbon thby are taken out nnd each
one is cut again into four. Tbey are
again placed within shoots of vellum,
thus making a pile of COO out of tho
original piecoSj which are belabored
f r another hour or more with a ham
mer of loss woight than tho first.
The faces of all tho hammers ere
slightly convex, which causes the gold
to spread. When the beating is comi
pleted, the loaves of gold are again
subdivided by .four, making twonty
four hundred in all, and are put into
three parcels of eight hundred each,
the gold alternating with the vollum
na before, and each parcel is subjected
10 anoiner oeaung, more carciuny ad
ministered on account of tho thinnese
of tho metal. Tho boatjng lasts for
five or six hours, at tho close of which
the edgos 'of tho loaves, which are
quito uneven) are cut with asharpreod,
us the gold adheres to a metal knife,
and tho loaf, ready for uso, is placed
in the books in which it is sold, each
leaf of gold being about throe inches
square, and twenty. five making a
book. Tbey aro very seldom torn or
cracked.
