DATES TO APRIL 4.
Chicago, April . 1. The Memphis Argut of
March 28th gives editorial prominence to
statements that President Johnson has writ

do as the other Southern States have done
in order to issue bis pro lania ion declaring
a general amnesty, and tbnt the lately re

the States have that representation in Con

Representatives of all the States in Contrres-.
In the same letter the President announced
the policy ho intends to pursue in regard to
Tennessee, which, while we deem proper for
the present to withhold, may assure our
readers that it will at onco lilt our S ate up
out of the mire of oppression from an irre
sponsible ol'gnrchy and place it by the side
of the other States on the platform of equal
rights'.

DEMOCRATIC STATE CONVENTIOV.
The Democratic State Convention met day
before yesterday, at Portland, And organized
by ele ting L F Grover President, and Vic
Trevitt and B. L. Norden Secretaries! The
convention had a long and busyession during
the day, but did not make any nominations
The following are the resolutions adopted as
a platform :
1. Reeolved, That we adlrm as the end of
our political faith and practice, our Sleadfast

Equal aud exact justice to all men ot what
eei- slate, p.trty or sect; the support of the
State Governments in all their right4, and of
the Fe leral Government in all its vigor:
jealous care of the elective franchise; the

power; economy In all public expenditures;
the general diffusion of education ; the en

God according to the dictates of his own con
science; freedom of spetch, freedom of the
press, and freedom of the person, under the
protection of the habeas corpua.
2. That the action of the mnjorit) in Con

ut eleven states, is au unwarranted assump

the liberties of the people ; that we do and

of tbe Freedmen's Bureau and Civil Rights

changing or destroying our cherished form of
Uovernruent.
3. That tbe position assumed by Preslden
Johnson, that the Representatives from the
Southern Slates ought to be at once admitted
' to seats In Congress, and tbnt legislation af
fecting sucb Slates while tbey are unrepre

4. That the assumptions of the opposition
that the Democratic party is in favor of reuu

of nullification and secession, is slanderous
and lulse.
' 5. That we endorse the sentiment of Sena

right of suffrage to any other than white men
6.' That tbe exemption of 'United States
