Affray at Canyon City. We have
received a letter from Canyon Cily
dated tbe 24th inbt., which says that
on the 23d inet. two men named John
Grubb and C. Harr. Smith hud a dis
pute and quarrel tbero.in wnich words,
blowB and finully piutola wore need by
both parties, that tbey then clinched,
and that Grubb was shot in tbo groin
while in the &ot of gouging out Smith's
cyo. Grubb died in about an hour
afterward.
We would remark that wo prceumo
the abovo is correct, but that tbe
loiter from which we get tho inf'orraa
tiort Is- without a signature, being
dated the 24th inst., the morning on
which the stage probably left, the
writermay have inadvertently omittod
his signature. In this connection let
us' Buy that nowspapers are always
very anxious to get hold of every
npecies of lntolligonco as soon as pos
sible, and that wo are very thankful
Jto any person who may furnish us an
torn, but that we always like to know
Hat what we publish is reliable and
orrect. In this case tbo evident in.
telligenco of tho writer is all that i;ro-
rented us from casting the letter aside.
Si nee tho abovo was in type we
oarn from a gentleman who came
llown on tho stuiro that these facts are
lubatanilully correct, and that Mr.
mith had been arrested, examined

Eeckntly at Duyton and in other
irta of the Stato slrango pieces of
fossil remains havo been found, to
which the newspapers have called
considerable attention.
ltegnrding them tho Rev. Mr. Con
don of this city, than whom soienco has
not a moro sincere lover, thus writes
to tho Oragonian, and we commend his
remarks to the careful attention of
everybody who possess any specimens
of this naturo, hoping that all such
may be retained in our midst and lliat
at no very distant day they may be
gathered together, where they will
be ot u bo to the student and entertain,

1'ortland or Salem certainlv ought
to keep them for tho instruction of
our own young peoplo. In either
place these fossils might be made tbo
beginning ol a btate collection. Can
not your library association purchaso
them and let the cabinet bogin at once
in their rooms?
I would offer tbe following reasons
to dissuade General Palmer from send.
Ing thoso fossils away from our State:
1. Ihe colleges and museums of the
East have no such need of them that we
have.
They have whole skeletons and part
skeletons in several of tho Eastern
cities. - The Smithsonian Instituto has
specimens from many parts of the
country. .
Oregon needs berown fossils for tbe
instruction of her own youth. Our
young meniought not to be compelled
to go to some Eastern, city to learn
wnaia iootn or lusu or a. Done, ot
MaBtodon is.
2. The scientific world will team of
and publish the fact of the discovery of
loose tossiia without sending tbe speoi
mens themselves away.. : . :
8. Marly all of the older States have
their, own (State collection.- We need
ours. If we ever get one, It will be
uniortunate that these JUay ton speci
mens ate not among them.
