Betrothal, in China, is a matter with
which tho parties most deeply con.
corned have generally little to do
lhoir paronls or guardians manago
their betrothal much in the following
manner :
A person is employed oa a eo-be
tween, or match maker between the
families. The proverb says, " without
ngo-betweon betrothal cannot beef
tooted." This person may be either a
man or a woman. Usually the go
botween engaged by the family which
lirst makes the proposal is employed
hy both families in subsequent nego
tiations. .
Tho negotiation is genorally com
menced by the family to which the
hoy or young man belongs. Tho goi
betwoon is furnished with a card,
Hlr.ling the ancestral name, nnd eight
characters which donole tho hour,
day, monthnnd year of birth of the
candidate for matrimony. This card
he takes to the family indicated and
tenders a proposal of marriage in re
gard to a daughter in bnhalf of u 6on
of tho party employing him. If tho
parents or guardians of the girl, after
instituting inquiries about the family
making it, are willing to entertain the
proposal, i hoy consult ft fortune teller
who decides, after considering the
oigltt characters which indicate the
timo of the birth of parlies, whether
tho betrothal would bo fitting and
auspicious. If a favorable decision bo
mado, tho go between is furnishod
with a card indicating tho hour, day,
month and year, when tho girl they
tire willing to betroth was born, which
ho dulivors to the family which cm
ployed him. The purents of tho lad
then consult a fortuno-toller in regard
to the proposed betrothmont, furnish,
ing him with the diameters which in
dicato the ages of tho boy and girl.
If this fortune-teller pronounces fav
orably, and the two families agree in
rogard to tbo details ot the marriage,
u formal assent is made to the betroth
mont. A Prodigious Man. The largest
man on record was Miles Darden, a
native of North Carolina, who' was
born in that State in 1798, and who
died in(Tonnessee in 1857. lie was
seven feot and six inches high, and in
, 1845 weighed eight hundred andsevs
only-one pounds. At his doath be
weighed a little over one thousand
-pounds. In 1849 bis coat was but1
toned around three men, each Of them
weighing over two hundred pounds,
who walked together in it acrohS the
square at .Lexington, in looU it re
quired thirtoon and a half yards of
cloth, one yard wide, to make bim a
coat. . Until 1853, he was active and
lively, and ablo to labor: bat from
that lime was compelled to stay at
home or be hauled about in a two
horse wagon. Ilia coffin was eight
foot long, thirty. five incbos deep,
cisbtoen across tho head, and fourteen
across the feet'. It required twenty
four yards of black velvet to cover
tho side and iid of tbo coffin. Miles
Darden was twico married, and his
ohildron aro very large, though it is
probable that none of them will over
reach bait the weight ot their lulner,
