, New Method op making Siioeb. A
new slvlo !' shoes id now in tlTTa city
Tlio invention is simple. Tho upper
put t of tho boot is cut out in almost
ordinary fashion by a regular shoema
ker. Tho solo and heel tiro madq, of
hard mnpjo wood, and are joined by a
shank of solo lonthor, which gives all
tiooded cltistlcity. Tho uppers are fas.
tened to tho solo by a thin band of
iron, which encircles the rim of tho
solo, and fastens solo and upper togeth
er in a manner moro effectual tlian any
cowing can do. When put toolher
the shoo presents a handxomo rppear
nnce, and is us light as a leather shoo
of corresponding sizo. The heoU aro
comfortably hollowed out on tho upper
sido, and tho soles have tho proper
curvo to insure easy wilking. Tho
invention (mado by u Canadian, nami
ed Lefanior, of Quebec,) is the proper
ty of Mr. Win. Kobinson, (palenloo,)
of this oily. -Tho boots and shoes,"
undor the patent are made by an In
corporated company, having a work
ing capital of $200,000, and manufac
tory in Court street, Brooklyn capa
ble of turning out 100 puics per day
at present. N. Y. Busincss'dlirror.
Tho Empress Joscphitto was very
fond of perfumes, and, above all, of
musk. Ilcr tlresslngi'oom at ilalmai
son was filled with it, in spile of Napo
leon's frcqucntromor.slrances. Forty
years have elapsed sinoo her death,
and the present owner of Malmaison
has had tho walls of that dressing
room repoatodly washed und painted;
but noiihor scrubbing, nquafortls, nor
paint has been euflicictit to romovo
the smell of tho good empress's musk,
which continues as strong ns if the
hottlo which contained it bad boon
but yestarday removed.
Cain has found an apologist in Dr.
Cummings, of London, who, in his
Lives of the Patriarchs, says that as
Cain could never have seen a dead
human being, or learned anything
about doath, or known that a heavy
blow would destroy tho vitality, St
which, again, ho could have perceived
nothing, his gtfilt was, at tho outside,
only manslaughter.
, Bisiiop Eldeii, of Tonnessoo, has
writton a defonco of the Popo's recent
bull against tho Froe Masons and
other secrot societios. Ho says that
tho Catholio church has always op
posod secrot societies as founded upon
dungcrous principles, and that many
of tho Masonic Lodges of Europe are
infidel and blasphemous associations.
The oyBter merchants of Paris havo
raised tho prico of this bivalve to such
an extravagant height that Parisians
havo determined to eat none. As
thoy may livo without eating oysters,
whilo the oyster merchants cannot
livo wilhoflt soiling them, it is likely
this strike will bring prices down.
James Linen, a California poot, has
toon treated with ' distinguished con-
sidcration" by tho poets of Now York.
They gave him a grand dinner at tho
Aslor IIouso, at which- the voaorable
'Wm. Cullon Bryant presided.
Tire town of Clio, in the island of
Scio, has boon almost wholly over
thrown by an earthquake; the two
lightthouses in the port only remain.
Taxation is .said to bear equally on
all dasses from the (act that it hardly
passes on tho rich and presses hardly
on tbo poor.

gratitude in a poor man, take it for
granted that there would be as much
jjenerosity f ho wre a rich one. , ,
