tants or this country are disfranchised by
cruel, tyrannical laws. Ia this we do not re
fer to our colored brethren, but to the de
scendants of the aborigine! of the Columbia
Huin. The difference between our relatione
to the descendants- oi Ham and' these people
if, that the first were torn from their country,
despoiled of property and liberty, for the ad
vantage of the barbarous whites; while- the
whiles came among the Indians, ate their
lome and tamat, stole tbeir borers an I daugh
ters, shot their young bucks, murdered their
old men, occupied their lands and made them
selves " at borne," in general way, and be
haved pretty much as they pleased whenever
tbey bad the upper hand. 'Equal anil exact
justice requires that, if the colored men of
the soctb are to be enfranchised, the Indians
ought also to be allowed to vote.' If it is nr-le-Jsary
that voters shall know bow to read
the Constitution of the United States, this
difficulty may be easily overcome by translat
ing that instrument luto tbe Chinook Jargon.
For the extension of like facilities to our
Colored brethren of he south, we shall feel
inclined to advocate, tbe translation of the
same into pure ABhnntee and dialects in corr
mon use on tbe Guinea coist. A phonetic
arrangoment of the Constitution, on tbe basis
of tbe ordinary negro-pronunciation of Eng
lish at tho south, will also be uscful-in bring
ing the right of suflVuge within easy reach of
the colored folks and rrittny Illiterate whites.
IS at above all,' we demand the electoral right
lor the Indians; excepting the rebellious
" Kniikes. These, however, by taking an oath
rf allegiance, and swearing not to "biiBh
wltack" or go out " guerriilaing" any more,
may avail themselves of tbe benefit of the law
for the extension of the right of suffra'g.
The bearing of this movement on tbe politics
of the Slate is obvious. By having the In
dian vote principally in tbe Calumbia Basin,
we will be enabled to bring the inhabitants of
the Great Willamette to our own terms, when
. ever they have the audacity to entertain ideas
inimical to our interests, or disagreeable to
our sensibilities.
