II. L. C1IAPIN, nlStf JUSTIN GATES,
Mount IIood is a stati of Eruption agaik.
From early In the morning, yesterday, notil
night dense volumes of smokev were Been
rts!ri(? from thesout-heastsideofMountHood,
nenr tli o summit.' The smoke clouds drifted
to the west and bung around the Crest of the
ponk, or flouted off into the canon of Hood
Hiver. If the amount of smoke is the cri
terion by which to judge the degree ot ac-
tivity prevailing in the subterranean furnace
ot-the mountain, then the concealed volcanic
npcnciej are very much stirred up about this
time. It is not impossible that we shall yet be
treated to the sublime spectacle of a Chira
borazo-like eruption, with accompanying
earthquakes rivers "of lava thundering ex
plosions nnd such like concomitants of alive
volcano on a big scale.- It may yet happen
that a torrent of lava, like that which ran
frdra Ma una Loa some years since, will pitch
off into the Columbia River and impede
navigation at some point between here and
the Cascades. IT ibis should occur, there
viill doubtleis be some far-seeing town-site
speculator, with sufficient presence of mind,
to at once claim the first quarter section be
low the obstruction. There are several other
contingent speculations upon the occurrence
of a new break in the navigation of the
river; among which, a railroad around the
new Impediment, or a canal, are the most
important.
Shooting) Affair. A shooting match oc
curred yesterday afternoon at the corner of
Second and Washington streets. Two
parties names unknown 'and persons not
Identified had a quarrel, and one wanted
' the other "to take it back, or bite the dust."

out effect. Being in dread of arrest, both
parties left the gronnd very suddenly. It
would be well for the police to keep a good
look out for persons of belligerent procllvl
ties; not that it is particularly desirable to
prevent the killing of any person or persons
fooli'h enough to shoot at each other in the
streets, but for fear some innocent and-re
apectable person may be hurt by a random
shot. To prevent the inauguration of the
Montana code of criminal jurisprudence, we
must avoid the Institution of the Idaho and
- Arizona codes of honor, with the consequent
pistol-practice. . ',

person by the name of Bybee was arrested,
on the charge of being the' one who fired the

Fnou Liwistom to Heuna. -Gov. Lyon, In
his message to the Idaho Legislature, speaks
as follows : , 1
It is left to yonr discretion whether it would
not be well to memorialize Congress for an
appropriation for the coastructroa of a road
from Lewiston, in Northern Idaho, to Helena,
in the territory of Montana, via the Lolo Fork
and Bitter Root Valley. From the rapidly
increasing trade in that direction and the late
important discoveries In the uiackfoot coun
try of the precious metals, as well as Ibe dif
ficulties attendant upon- the navigation of the
headwaters of the Missouri River, this route
is the nearest now known between ibe two
nolnts named. ' Ladened nack-nttes have
made the trip in tees than twtlve days.
The Governor is mistaken in this matter,
It is 120 ml les from Lewisto to Bitter .Root
Talloy f 8Q more oX a very rough trail to the
month of Little Blackfoot, and 5. more! from
thence to Helena total, 350 miles.-' Of this
