"MoiftB Cave -Discoveries oi HuMan
IZemains in England. The discover
ot fossil human remains In a cave in
tfce Bjhopo colliery, in Jiingland, havi.
already been announced, but the Lon-
j don Times gives tbe following add.--iiona.
particulars .-..' . ,
jCgreat additional quantity of hu
man and other animal remains has
been' discovered in the Kyhc-pe colliery
cavo within the last lew days, and as
it has not yet been fully explored, or
its ermination reached, .it is likely
iti&i still moro will bo found as the
qnarrymen go on with their work.
Among tbe bones dug up on Thurday
last, are two adult human skulls, male
and female, the lower jaw-bone of a
child of five or six years old, and a
number of other bones, almost enough
- to construct another skeleton. The
dimensions of the adult skulls are as
follows tr Circunifurenco of both, 21
iiichesj across the posterior lobe, 6
inches and 6 inches; and across the
anterior, 5 inches and 4 inches. There
are also moro bones of badgers, foxes,
cats, rabbits, etc Including ' what
Las been carried of by the workmen
and visitors, there mur-t have been
several bushels dug up in all. Stveral
bits of charred wood-have been found,
And also a chip of wood, clean cut
with a very r-harp axe, indicating the
date of tbe human remains within a
few centuries. In a little recess near
the roof of the cave was discovered, a
number of small bones of different
kinds, evidently placed there by band,
just such a depository as a girl play
ing at housekeeping might be sup
posed to make. Some of the ox boneB
appear to" have been broken with a
hammer, and one of them bears the
mark of having been sawn through.
Tbe most probable conjecture now is,
that these relics are those of a family
of thieves or robbers, or of rcfugoes
from invasion or persecution, and that
they, had met their death suddenly
and 'unexpectedly perhaps by suffo
cation, like the Macdonals of tbe Isle
of Eigg; as the hands of the chief of
Macleod, or the Arabs in tbe cave of
Dahra, at the bands of those of Gen.
Kumoriciere. There would be plenty
of brushwood near for the accomplish!
raent of suoh a purpose.
Concerning Rat's Tails. Some
experiments in what is termed animal
eraftinc have recently been described
by Dr Berl in a paper forwarded to
the French Academy of Science. He
eavs. " that if tbo tail ot a rat be cut
off, skinnedand then inserted under
the skin of the' same animal, it will
continue to live and grow as before.
If a fracture is effected, the fractured
parts will join again exactly as tbev
would if the' tail veeio in its natural
place; in short, both physiologically
and pathologically tbe grafted part
follows tue general laws ot.nature. '
In St. Petersburg, Russia, crowds
of people rush to one of the theatres
to see an EngliBlr-teailor, who professes
to have been tattooed when in cap
ti vily among the savages of one of tbo
l'acino islands, and who appears in
what is termed " the costume of a can-
' n'bal.8."
Accordino to Gerald MaAey. nearly
all of Shakespeare's sonnets were
written for tho Earl of Southamton,
tbe rest for .William Ilarpert, and the
etory of Shakespeare beeping a mis.
tress of whom he was robbed by bis
friend, vanishes into tbin air. .
Stanton and Beecher - On the
occasion of the late visit of Henry
Ward Jieecher to Washington, Secre
tary Stanton presented him with a
Brevet Lioutenant.Coldnelcy for bis
son, who is serving as Firt Lieutenant
in the 4th Regular Artillery regiment.
