TUB MONTANA TRADE.
, We have advices from Montana to tbe 25th
of November. Tbe Pott't commercial artic
notei a considerable advance in moat of tbe
staples of subsistence, and tbe article of to
b vcoo bas gone up to an extraordinary figure,
"frith a prospect of being worlb $16 nnd $18 a
pound before the winter is over. Tbcse ex
traordinary fluctuations indicate tbe difficulties
attending the supply of that country from tbe
east. No degree of foresight can so propor
tion an .assortment as to avoid a scarcity of
some necessary article of trade; and tbe
length of time required to communicate with
t'je States exposes the consumer to tbe fangs
of monopolists, who prey upon bis necessities.
Developments ot this character render the ac
quisition of the Montana trade a possibility
to merchants from this side, and all that is
Deeded to render it a certainty, is concert of
action and tbe improvement of means of com
munication. At Diamond City, east of tbe Missouri
Riverand at Helena, flour is worth $30 per
hundred pounds.
Tbe following are the Virginia City quota-
tatious (retail prices, twenty per cent addvd):
Flour St. Louis, f) sack, $20 (3)27 50;

Christmas Amusements and Festivities.
The exhibition on CbrUtmas night at the
Sisters' School, wag crowded, and tbe affair
was a grand success. At the Congregation
al, Church, the Christmas Tree called to
gether a large assemblage, and everything
passed off most happily. The Firemen's
Call was the cause of about fifty couples
tripping the light fantastic toe until a late
hour of the morning. There was a large
amount of sleigh-riding, miscellaneous li-
' quor-drinking and a due proportion of bois
. terous hilarity. Taken all together, it was
A very Merry Christmas. We would suggest
that hereafter the school exhibitions and
Christmas Trees have precedence of tbe
lighter amusements, and that holiday balls
shoa'd take place some evening after Christ
mas; on the principle that we may dance any
night of the holiday week, but the other en
tertainments are only appropriate on Christ
mag night. Tbe school exhibitions, In case
of any considerable increase of tbe popula
tion of the city the coming year, should be
in more capacious houses, as there is so
much interest taken in them, that a much
larger attendance would be secured if there
was any certainty of sufficient room.
