TUB STILL, SMALL VOICE.
A still small voice lg whispering
la accents soft aud mild,
It comes upon the eenhyr's wing
Thai thus the forests wild.
It cornea upon the cveulng breese,
IU plaintive tones 1 hour,
Low murmuring In the waving tree
It whispers,-Uod U uour"
It come ant in the whirlwind's roar,
Nor In the ocean gulo, -
When angry billows laeh the shore
And loud the jteinpests wall;
But when night's silvery shades around
The slumboritig waters brood
There comes a suit and solemn sound,
It whispers, "dud is good,"
It comes not In the thunder tones,
Whon Aery lightnings glow;
When fierce convulsive nature groans
" The requiem of her woe;
B 't gently, whn the moon's pail light
Gomes streaming from above,
Bwoet as the hum of angel's (light,
It whispers, "Uod is lovu."

THE TRIAIi OP JKFF. DAVtS.
. The N. Y. Herald, of Nov. 1st, on
infbrmiuion receivod from Washing,
ton, Bays that Joff. Davis is lo bo ur-
. ruignod on the euargoof treason in levy
ing war aguinst the United States, and
. the plan of prosecution will embrace
no other charge. All charges of com.
plioity with Wirtz, oto.( are lo be aban
doned, and the purpose of the prose
cution will be to define tho nature of
treason and fix its punishment. As the
Wirlz trial was intended to reveal the
"inhumanities of the rebel leaders and
forever disgrace the rebel Confederacy
in the eyes ot the world, the trial of
"Davis U intended i to make equally
: odious the treason which had bred
euch horrors. It is wall known that
Mr. Davis claims that he cannot be
' triod for treason, on the ground that
his State bad eooedod, ami ho was
bound to follow her lead.- His entire
defence would rest on the busis of the
right of Secession. Such a plea would
-. have but little force, in view of the
fact that the late Constitutional Cons
vention of Mississippi, the State which
Davis Represents, uullified instead of
repealing the Act of Secession, thus
' declaring that the State did not seode,
and agreeing with one of tho great
'principles wbiuh President Johnson
adopted and persistently maintained,
that none of tho Southern States were
ever legally out of tho Union. It was
also determined that the Wirlz trial
. should be the last trial by Court Mar-
tlal. The trial ot imvis will Do be
fore the highest tribunal in the land
It is not known as yet whether Chief
JuBtico , Chase will preside, but it is
' presumed that be will. At a Cabinet
, session in August, when thedutails were
in-run o-fld.iL wasdecocided that the trial
ofDavisshould immediately follow that

The Attorney-General was authorize
to select three counsel to aid bim in
