"AJRTHEKE we will continue to sell articles nsnally TV The Blub Mountain Babbier. One of the curiosities of the Columbia Basin, is the Blue Mountain barrier, with its continuation to the eastward, the Lapwal Mountains. Running partly along the 45th parallel, this great retaining wall of the Snake River de pression, trends slightly to the north as it connects with the western spurs of the Bit ter Root Range. At one time, the waters of Snake River Basin, which drain considera bly over one-third of the area of the Colum bia Basin, were confined by this great moun tain wall to the depth of over half a mile. Ascending the highest peaks of the great Wallowa Stack of mountains, there are points where the action of the water, in rending the great barrier, are plainly visible A spectacle of unusual grandeur is witnessed from the great peak to the east of the head of Eagle Creek. Here, at the height of near 10,000 feet amid ravines and chasms, where the snow lies perpetually the s'ght reaches off to the east where the bends in Snake River Caflon reveal, terrace upon terrace, the marks of the successive steps in the drain' age of the country, where the mines of Owy hee and Boise are located. No basis of cal culation can even approximately determine the lapse of ages since the waters of a lake covering over 125,000 square miles, first spilled their waters down the noithern slope of the Blue Mountains ; but it is an easy ex ercise of the imagination to form In the mind the picture of the slow, simple and mighty process of nature by which its bed was turned into a country fitted for the bab itation of man. It is possible to determine the relative hoight of the pass at the Cas cades and that in the Blue Mountain barrier, at the time when the waters first began to run out at the lower gorge. It is probable that the one at the Cascades was considera bly hlghei than the other. The water marks are still so distinctly visible that an exam. ination, with proper scientific appliances, would establish an interesting fact In the history . of the geological formation of this country. kept in a Kind-Class Drug Store, at 20 per cent.
