An Arabian Sultana. Mr. Sala's
letter from Algiers, which in published
In the London papers, bus the follow
ing: . .... - . ,
No, you are Africa, this, indeed, is
Algiers, and the Arabian Nights are
all around you. There goes the Sul
tana Scheherazade. Thofiultana walk
ing resemblos a clothes bag bifurcated,
or a pair of well inflated, pillows, sur
D30untod by a bolster, and covered
with a mosquito curtain. 1 The SuU
tana may bo one of the wives of a
wealthy Morosco," or she may be a
washerwoman. She Maurcque, and
her out door custom is invariable. It
consists of a pair of very baggy gallU
gaskins, not at all of Zouave cut, but
precisely that kind of Turkish trou
sers which Mandano wears to the
opera of Antaxorxes. These, the
shintiyan of the Turkish woman, are
of plain white muslin; above is a quan
tity of semi diaphauousdrapery, which
I cannot attempt to describe; over all
is thrown a long robe, or fomenino
togs, of very fine white linen or gauze,
called a baik. Sometimes Another
baik of a somewhat stouter material
is worn oxor the first.. It is drawn
close to the form, and tho general
composition of the pillow-case legs
and the bolster body is, in the on tiro
effect droll. The foet and anklos are
bare, and from the huo of those ex.
tremttios the Algorine expert is, 1
suppose, enabled to judge whether
the veiled lady is dark or fair. Of
Course, 1 only presumed to look at the
Sultana's supporters for tho purpose
of vorifying the factlhat her feet are
thrust into wide shoes called sebabath
which again, are cased in looser slip
pers of yellow moroeco, the papouch
es or babouches.
You can see nothing of tho Sultana
Boheherazade's face but her oyos. The
upper baik comes well down ovor her
temples; then yon have a pair of big
black, sloe-like orbs, the lids so pros
longed that they almost meet, or aro
darkened at least with kohl till thoy
seem to ioin. Tho rest of the free is
hidden by a handkerchief tied tiglvtly
behind. Some Arab ladies are said
coquettishly to make use as a veil of ft
handkerchief so tranaparent that their
features can bo perfectly well discern
ed beneath ; but with the vast major
ity of the Sultanas I have soon to day
the gauze mask has boon a reality, and
the concealment effectual I don't
wonder at this Veil, answering to the
Turkish "yashmark," having been,
through bo many centuries, bo obsti
nately , retained. A protty woman
may let the passers-by know, even
through her veil, that she is comely;
but an ugly woman is, by the merciful
interposition of the knotted handker
chief , enabled altogether to hide her
ill'favorodness.
