Immigrants and the Natch ess
Road. Mr. T. R. Berry, writing
from Walla Walla on the 18 nit., Bays
that thirty teams bad crossed the
Columbia river at Wallula for Pugel
Sound. Whether they will com
through, or be induced to turn back
and go to Oregon, remains to be seen.
Our people can congratulate them.,
flelvos that they so well succeeded in
opening the road, and that a few emis
grants have come in by that routo,
and amply demonstrated its feasibili
ty. Opposition to tho rcrad, we re
gret to say, has beon waged from tbe
first, not only from Orogonians and
people east of tho mountains, but
from porsons living on the Sound,
through sheer joalousy, and it has
been kept up since the completion of
tbe road, in tbe circulation of fitlso
reports among tho immigrants and
turning tliem to Oregon. We have
posilivo evidence that tho impression
was assiduously sproad at Walla
Walla that the tho routo was impiac
tidablo- There have been a few per'
eons, however, east of tho mountains,
who havo endeavored to counteract
this malicious effort, to whom all
credit should bo given. A gentleman
who left Van Ogle's yesterday week
informs us that thore were a few
teams in the mountains which were
uxpoctcd in soon. Standard.
Nations Without Fire. Accord
ing to Pliny, fire was for a long
time unknown to some of the Egypt
tiatiB ; and when Euxodus (tbe celebra
ted astronomer,) first showed it to
them, they were absolutely in rupture.
Tbe Persians, Phoenician, Greeks and
several other nations acknowledge
that their ancestors wore without the
use ot fire, and the Ch nese confess the
earnest their progenitors. Porapani
us Mela Plutarch and other ancient
author, speak of nations, who, at
tbe time they wrote knew not the
use of fire, or but just learned it.' Facts
of the same kind are also attested by
several modern nations. The inhabi
tants' ot the Marian Inlands, which
wero discovered in 1551, hud no idea
of fir. Never was astonishment great
er than theirs when they saw it on
the descent of Magellan in one of
their islands. At first they believed
it was some kind of animal that fixed
to and fod upon wood. The inhabi
tants of the-Philippine and Canary
Islands were formerly equally igno
rant. Africa at tbe present, even in
our day, is in the same state.
Printing Raper Made from Bam
boo. It is stated that the Albany Jour
nal is now printing on paper made
from bamboo. The bamboo is brought
from Jamaica, where it is produced in
unlimited abundance, and costs, de
livered here from ten to twelve dollars
Iter cord. It is cut into five leet
engths, conveyed to manufactory,
where it is soaked in waYm water tor
a time : it is Ihon put in steam guns
of the form of ordinary cannon, where
it is thoroughly saturated with steam
and then exploded, under an immense
pressure, which tears it into fibres
When thus torn it is placed in an im
mensoj'pulping boiler, where it is
boiled under a pressure of sixty pounds
to .the inch, and from tbeuce blown
into a receiving tank. It is then per
feot pulp, ready to bo made into pa

Thb Burial Place or Wik.es Booth.
A correspondent recently visited the
U. S. arsenal at Washingron, and ihus
describes tbe supposed sepulchre of J.
Wilkes Booth: "Entering the lower
rooms of tbe prison, and puflsing thro'
devious halls formed by piles of car
tridge boxes, we came at length to
what seeraod to be a solid wall, against
which was piled ammunition, but
through an aperture, on shoving aside
a. heavy plank, an empty, floorless
room, in ooe oornerof wnich the loos-,
eoed earth indicated the burial plaoe
of the foulest aesauBin of the time."
