A Patent Well. A patent well
is among the new inventions recontly
brought into practical use at tbe .Lust
The process is bo exlromlr simple,
and, aocOrding to report, bo effectual
that it would soom as though it must
soon come into general use. An iron
tube is driven straight into theground,
just as one would drive a stake, and
on reaching a depth at which any
well would hod water, a pump is at
tacbod to the end of tbe tube remain
ing above tho ground, and up comes
the water. Of courso it is applicable
only to soil free from rock and bould
ers: as it is in such sou onlv that an
instrument of that kind could bo driv
en to the required depth. Tbe prin
ciple is obvious. By working the
pump in that portion ofthe tube above
ground a vacuum is formed in a Band
and gravel between the pump valve
