BU8?tCTTUUT DEDICATED TO TBI CITT PATBERS.
A fearful whisper cornea lrom lh East
Of a racing monster, gRuut and grim,
Making of men a vnmpire feast,
lilichertt and low: at, greatest and leat
Aud all ha finds are food for Mint
And ever westward he holds his way,
Marching with slow, Insidious tread,
His victims struggle and weep and pray,
Anil iMHght cau his terrible imager stay
Till bis path is strewn with a thoasand dead.
Squalor h'e loves, and filth and crime;
What shall wo do to avert his wrathf
Can we nit purge our city in time.
With charcoal, water, and Hprinkiod lime,
And leave no place for his hideous path I
Or, will our rulers no danger know
Till at our door King Cliuhra halts,
While dead carts hither and thither go,
And Die thick air shudders with cries of woe,
Aud everywhere gupo the burial aultst
Take heed of tbo warning now take hood
While still there is time our homo-' to savel
For everywhere ripens the poisonous seed
On which King Cholera loves to feed,
Hut our cliy may he but a mighty gravel
Cleanse. 0 Fathers! those gutters and styes,
Festering kennels and filthy slums,
, llosklng under the doic-ly skies.
For it their stench must still arise
Whut shall we do when King Cholera comes?

PHOTOGRAPHY AS A DllAWlNO ROOM
Amubemsnt. Tho Paris corroepou-
dent of the London Morning Stat
writos : Dubroni is the name of u
young and most promising engineer,
a pupil of the Eoole Polytechniqne.
Laid up for several years with bad
bealthj his mind remained as active
as ever. Amidst the most intonse
bodily Bufferings he applied himself,
night and day, to the study and per
fection of photography hoping to ioi
tia'o tho masses into its raystorlos by
simplifying the manipulations and
turning photography into a drawing
room amusement within the reach oi
every purse. In this. Dubroni appears
to have been quite successful,
inasmuch as his ingonious apuraius
entirely does away with the necessity
of an operating chamber. You have
no longer to dread any stains or spots
on your dress or hands as the chemi
cal operations are accomplished with
the piquette, a small instrument by
means of which you can introduce into
the camera obBcura, through a little
orifice, the difforent chemical baths
which the plate undergo provious to
its bearing a picture. Dubroni, after
having pursued his experiments with
unabated ardor, is entitled to the hon
or of attaching his name to the science
of photography. Another distinguish
ing feature of his liliputian apparatus
is the readiness with which it can be
Bet up for use and repacked in a box
which does not exceed the size of a
lady's writing gobIx. Among the
nobilities who are amuB.ng themselves
during their summer vacations with
the appenal Dubroni are tho well
known diplomatists, Marquis do la
Valeetto and M. de PepBigny, and
no less a personage than Prince Napo
1 leon himself.
. A Good Character. A good char
acter is to a young man what a firm
foundation is to tho artist who propo
eos to erect a building on it; he can
well build with safety, and all who
behold it will have confidence in its
solidity a helping hand will novef
be wanted j but let a single part of
inis do aeiecuve ana you co on a nae
ard, amidst.doubting and distrust, and
ten to one it win tumble down at last
and mingle all that was built on it in
ruin. Without a good charaoter pov
erty is a curse; with it, scarcely an
evil. Happiness cannot exist where

calm and blissful in the sober scenes
of life, all'that is soothing in tho vale
of years, centres in and is derived from
a good character. Therofore acquire
