Giants. la the time of Augustus
"CtBsar there were two persons living
in iiomo-Cttlledldusio and Seoundilla,
eaoh -Of whom exceeding tea Ieet in
height Their bodies, after -death,
were kept and preservod as miracles
of curiosity in a sepulchre within tbe
-Sallustian gardens, i'liny names a
certain -Gabara, who in tbe days of
Claudius were brought out of Arabia;
and says he was nine ieet nine inches
high. The Emperor Maximalian, orig
inally a Tbrucian .peasant, meusured
-eight feet and a halt. His wife's brace
Jots served him as rings. Ilia voraci
ty was such that he consumed dai
ly forty pounds -of flenh and drank
eighteen bottles of wine. Ilia strength
was in propotionablo to his giganlio
hape. Ho could draw a loaded wag
on without help, and with blow of
his fist often broke tbe teeth in a
horse's mouth. He has also crushed
the hardest stones between his fingers
and cleft trees with his hands, Pliny
and Valerius Maxim'us speak of Poly
damas, a -celebrated athlete, son of
Nicias, who exceeded all men of his
day in statue and strength he aped
Hercules, not without pretension.
In Ml. Olympus he killed a lion with
a blow of bis fist, being unprovidod
with any other arms, lie could stop
a chariot with his hand in its most
rapid course. Once he singled out
the largest and fiercest bull from a
'whole herd, took hold of him hy one
of his hinder feet, aud notwithstanding
his struggles to escapn, grasped him
with such Btrongth that the hoof re
mained in his hand.

We might multiply iristdneei, but
our space forbids. For eigh teen years

and which he has never "sou. ght to

can we regard him than 8b n accesso

the latter.

A Charge. A lettor from Waeh
ington thus alludes to tho Southernors
now in that city : Can an observer
help comparing tho demoanor of these
Southren gentlemen with that which
they exhibited five years ago in the
summer of I860 ? Then arrogant, over
bearing, diotorial and defiant : now,
quiet, reserved, humble, and often
times penitent, asking pardon for past
offences. Nobody rejoices in their
humiliation ; tbey are not taunted
with it here in the national capital,
which thoy sought to destroy. All
thoir advances toward affability and
tho renowal of friendly intercourse
are cordially mot, and the mantle of
charity is large enough for all who
manifest a sincere desire to forget past
difference. Tbey are unanimous in
thoir feoling of good will and earnest
friendship. The scales of slavory have
dropped from their eyes and they see
what tbey have lost. Tbey are now
in great baste to make it up. They
know that revolutionized labor, im
proved systoms of education, untir
ing energy and capitul, are the moans
to develop tbe South : in other words,
that commerce and not cotton, nor
negroes, nor State rights is king.
Tbe expressions ot the rrosident to
ward this class of men are having an
excellent effect upon them, and his
personal popularity among Southern
men is rapidly sproading.
A Fashionable Galop. Rcforring
to tho new galop introduced as hops
at iushionable watering places, a Long
. Branch- correspondent writes : This
galop is comparatively a new dance
Tbe gontloman clasps his arm around
the lady's waist, and squeezes ad libi
tum, and tbe lady drops hers around
his neck and lovingly lolls her head
upon bis shoulder, and both go spin
ning and painting down tho room at
a speed elsowbere seen only at Dutch
lager beer gardens, after forty glasses
, each. Imagine a team consisting of
a blind mule and a lame cow hitched
to a cart, whereof one wheel is twice
the size of the other and neither is
round, driven rapidly over a super
annuated corduroy road, and you will
have some idea of the motion of tbe
galop, and nothing short of that will
do.
