the press announcing that orders bad been re
ceived at Mare Island to prepare the barracks

the Mare Ialaud Navy Yard for plat 8 and esti
mates tor the erection ot barracks to accom
modate 700 sailors and marines. The moni

placed in our harbor at six hours' notice,
should there be occasion for it. Every few
days the sieam is raised upon her to test the
workings of her engines and machinery, and

Robbbry. A 'man named Pomeroy was
robbed of seventy ouncee of gold, on the 3d
inst.;.obdut two miles' out from Umatilla
Tire' Adverlieer snyg-Hiut the robbery was
perpetrated by., a Mexican and an Indian
Pomeroy was on at wagon with his family
nod one or two others. Ho appears to have
resisted, but the robbers ovorpowered him
Taking assistance with him, he returned to
the spot where the robbery wrb committed,
and near it was found a purse' belonging to
Pbmeroy, and his revolver, Tbor"Meiican is
from the Dalies, and is known.
Gold in a niw Plaob. A gentleman, of
this city; wbile eating a piece of beef kidney
the otueitday, found two small pieces of gold
imbedded in it. One of the pieces was about
the bulk of fit 6 falr.-siied grains of wheat, and
the other as lurge-ns two, Each of the pieces
contained a Biimll amount of quuriz. It is
common to find imall pieces ol rock in the
ki'3nev8 of oxen and cows, but this is the only
case of gold being found in such ft place. The
'. animal probably took it up wMle drinking in
shallow water, or maybe by licking the ground
for salt or grass seed. .
