"Gold . Mining , -in : Wales. About
two years ago a number of -companies
wore stirtrOi with a view of working
tbe auriferous quartz deposits discov-
wed in severul localities in North
'Wales, and such was the confidence
entertained at the time in tbe success
of Welsh gold mining, that capital
was obtained without difficulty from
the overocredulous public. Tbe tem
porary success of the Vigra and Clo
gan mines was the greatest induce
ment to enter into these speculations,
and tho warning that appeared from
time to time in tho Times had little
effect upon the investing clust-es.
Among the companies formed were
the Cambrian, East Cambrian, Welsh.
Gold Mining, Castell Cum, Dorchan,
Dolfrwynog, East Cl"gan, St. David,
and many others, and fully one-half
the number are by this time either in
course of winding up, or unable to
proceed, owing to having spent the
wholo of their capital, and thoso that
are still working show hardly any
prospect of success. The Vigra and
Clogan mine, which formerly gave
such promising indications, haB not
paid any dividends for throe years,
which proves thut gold mining in the
Principality is a speculation In ,the
widest sense of the term. Quartz
containing a cortain' per cytage of
gold has been discovered at all the'
mines, but- the cost of reduction has
been far above tho yield of pure
metal,' and1 honce the unprofitable
character of the speculations, and un
til the mechanical appliances for ex'
tracting ; tho gold from tho quartz are
more perfect and loss costly than at
present, gold mining cannot be suc
cessfully carried on in Wales. Low
don Times, . .
Interesting Chemical Facts. A
platina crucible is made and retained
red hot over a large spirit lamp.
Some sulphurous acid is puured into
it. The aoid, though at common tem
perature one of the most volatile of
known bodies, possesses the singular
property of remaining fixod in the
red hot cruniblo, and not a drop of it
evaporates : in fact it is not in contact
with the crucible, but has an atmos
phere of its own interposed. A few
drons of . water are "now addod to tbe
sulphurous acid in the red-hot era
cible. Tbe dilated acid gets into ira
mediate contact with the boated
metal, instantly flashes off, and such
is the rapidity and onorgy of the
evaporation- that the water remains
behind and is frozen into a lump of
' ice in a hot crucible from which, soiz.
'ing tho moment botoro it again molts,
. . it may' be throwu out before the eyes
lot the astonished observer. This is
indeed " a pteco of natural magic,"
and as much liko a miracle as any
operation of the forces of nature could
produce. It is certainly ono of the
most singularly beautiful experiments
imaginable. It was devised by a
Freuoh eavan to illustrate the repel-
lant nower of heat radiating from
bodies at a high temperature, and of
the rapid abstraction of boat produced u
Dy evaporation . .

modern wonders of the world are:
tbe Steam Engine, tbe Printing Pross,
the Telescope, ; the Microscope,' tbe

remarkably -exemplified in tbe above

Articles in the Southern papers
render it apparent that while tbe rebel
paToled soldiers, and - the poor whites,
generally, are running around loose at
the South, the men ot property are in
great tribulation, and suffering in
tently under the proviso excluding
all ponsessing properly valued .at over
20,000 from the amnesty. The proper
ty owners have -deserved this retribu
lation, for it was in thoir power to'
have prevented rebellion. Of the
wealthy classes, many have managed,
by having converted their properly,
in the earlier stages of the rebellion,
into bills of exchange, cold, or other
property which they can keep out of
sight, to escape the trouble,, but it
bears with great seventy upon the
owners of real estate.-'
