Besides reporting, I’m a designer and
artist. And I recently made a holographic,
upside-down, color-changing infi nity-table
hanging-lamp chessboard with magnetic,
3D-printed chameleon-mica spiral chess
pieces.
Need to take a breath in the middle say-
ing all that.
It started at the Baker County Library.
First, I printed a set from thingiverse.com.
They turned out great — maybe fragile, but
very cool, very custom.
A layer of black paint later, I used color
changing, iridescent mica powders in op-
posing orange-purple and blue-green sets,
then epoxy so they’d be slightly stronger
and glossy.
The chess grid itself was a 1-foot pane of

plexiglass. Using the crop shear I sliced out
1½-inch squares of hologram foil into the
8x8 grid, fl ipped it upside down and added
magnets.
I used wood to make the frame, then
bought a USB-powered color LED strip,
cut to 4 feet and wrapped inside the frame.
Then I got a mirror and a one-way mirror.
Sandwiched over the lights together, they
form an impressive, hole-like illusion.
All assembled and plugged in, it might
hang over a dining table, or directly on a
wall.
Of course, now that I’ve done all this
work, the hard part is ignoring the whisper-
ing guy on my shoulder saying “You can’t
sell this, just keep it.”
And on the other shoulder, another one
saying “You could charge like 300 bucks.”
Problem is, they’re both wearing little
devil costumes.

New releases
Watkins Family Hour, ‘Vol. II’
Tom Petty’s pianist plays “Tennessee
Waltz,” an Ernest Tubb classic rides a Bo
Diddley beat, and a deep
cut by the ‘60s band the
Zombies becomes a Dis-
ney-style lullaby.
The latest album from
Watkins Family Hour lasts
just 39 minutes, but that’s not to say it
falls short. Like its 2015 predecessor, “Vol.
II” captures the adventurous spirit of the
musical variety shows hosted by siblings
Sara and Sean Watkins during their en-
during residency at the Los Angeles club
Largo. The stellar new set is more con-
sistently engaging than the fi rst album,
thanks to a range of styles and collabora-
tors. Among those featured are Benmont
Tench, a Largo regular best known for his
work with Petty.
