Carol Ann Toombs
April 13, 1946 - August 13, 2022
Carol Ann Toombs passed away at age
76 on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022. She had
been in declining health and is now in
God's hands.
Carol was born on April
13, 1946, in Pendleton,
Oregon, to Jesse D. Toombs
and Margaret H. (Toombs)
Cooley-Wells. At the young
age of 2, Carol won the
princess title at the Kiddy
Carnival ran by the Lions
Club. In junior high, she was
a drum majorette and was a
cheerleader throughout high
school. Carol graduated in
1964 from Pendleton High
School, working at the
Francis Shop after school
and on summer holidays.
She was a 1968 graduate from Oregon
State University where she was affiliated
with Delta Delta Delta Sorority and was
also a member of Orchesis and Little Sister
of Minerva, both national honoraries.
In 1966, while attending OSU, Carol
competed in a national contest sponsored
by Glamour Magazine. Fashion photos
from college campuses all over the United
States were entered and judged by their
magazine editors. Selected from more than
350 entries, Carol won the title for Oregon
state and was chosen one of the 10 Best-
Dressed Coeds in the United States. She
and the nine other winners spent nine days
posing for photographers, going to parties
and sightseeing. They were entertained by
Sammy Davis Jr., Jack Jones and Rodney
McDowell while over 1,500 members of
the fashion industry were in attendance
and had them model.
Carol earned a degree in education from
OSU and taught in the Beaverton School
District until her marriage to Grimm
Paige Mason, then making their home in
New York City. Once again, she was back
working in the fashion industry. She worked
as an assistant manager at a boutique
fashion shop on Fifth Avenue called
Catherine Caprieti Designs,
and I. Miller Galleria where
she served as commentator
and fashion coordinator for a
style show held in the main
ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.
Not only were 500 women in
attendance, Gloria Steinem
was also their guest speaker.
As successful as she was,
Carol always dreamed of
moving back to the West
Coast, where she finally
made her permanent home.
Once back home she earned
a master’s degree in special
education from Portland State University,
and it was here in Oregon she raised her
son, Bobby, the joy of her life.
Carol is survived by her son, Bobby
Prendergast of Portland; her mother,
Margaret Cooley-Wells of King City; two
sisters, Claudia (John) Lawton of Medford
and Cindy (Don) Wallace of Tigard; and
two nephews, Tanner (Avri) Lawton and
Travis (Michelle) Lawton of Medford.
Carol was preceded in death by her
father, Jesse D. Toombs and nephew, Todd
John Lawton.
Officiating the service is her friend
and pastor, Rev. Dr. James L. Wallace of
Rise Church formerly Calvin Presbyterian
Church in Tigard, where Carol was
affiliated.
Memorial services will be held on
Friday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at Spencer,
Libby and Powell Funeral Home in The
Dalles, Oregon. Burial will follow at
Odd Fellows Three Mile Cemetery for
graveside internment.
Janet Lee “Jan” Beitel, a longtime
resident of Oregon, was born on Sept. 18,
1936, in Portland. She died on Aug. 5,
2022, in Hermiston at the age of 85.
As a child, she traveled
with her family which
finally settled in Lincoln
City. She loved her time in
school and was a lifelong
learner, attending many
art courses into adulthood.
Jan
combined
her
entrepreneurial and artistic
skills to create a sign painting
business as she struck out on
her own. She worked with
extreme attention to detail
and with intense passion and
perseverance, aka “grit”. It
was rumored that she once painted a sign,
standing on top of a truck, secured with a
rope encircling her, while pregnant, in the
middle of winter.
Jan and her husband of 57 years, Bob
(“her knight in shining armor”), met through
a young adult group in Salem, which they
affectionately called the “Lonely Hearts
Club.” Shortly after meeting and attending
a few group outings, Jan and Bob eloped
to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1965. While Bob
worked as a schoolteacher, Jan enjoyed
music and dancing, performing the Can-
Can with the “Sawdusters” in Myrtle Point,
and continuing her sign painting business.
Jan and Bob welcomed their first two
children while living in The Dalles and
their third child while living in Powers.
They were ahead of their time, purchasing
fixer-uppers, making improvements, and
flipping for a profit to start a college fund
for each child.
Jan and Bob moved to Umatilla, in the
summer of 1977 with their three children.
When Mount St. Helens blew, May of
1980, Jan and Bob made the decision to go
into the sign business fulltime, and so they
formed Jan & Bob’s Signs. Their business
thrived for over 20 years, as they “made
their mark,” until retiring
and selling in 2002. That
did not slow her down, Jan
studied, tested, and earned
her contractor's license a few
years later.
Jan was passionate about
art and loved to paint with
her friends, her sister and
with her grandchildren.
She brought art to her
community, planning and
hosting arts and crafts shows
throughout her lifetime. Jan
was encouraging to those
around her and would provide support and
advice especially related to business. She
loved fishing in rivers, lakes and the ocean.
She went on many adventures including,
New York, Paris, Tahiti, and Hawaii.
However, her favorite place to be, other
than home, was the Oregon coast.
Jan is survived by her husband, Bob;
her siblings, Annie, Judy and David;
her children, Dan and Diana; and her
grandchildren, Alex, Libby, Nick, Sophia
and Maria.
She is preceded in death by her parents,
Edith and Frank Snyder; her brother,
Frankie; and her son, Andy.
Recitation of the holy rosary will be
held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at 2:30 p.m.
at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church,
Hermiston, Oregon. Mass of Christian
Burial will follow at 3 p.m.
Please share memories of Jan with her
family at www.burnsmortuaryhermiston.
