JOSEPH — Back after two pandemic
years, Oregon’s Alpenfest is looking for
volunteers and asking for food and craft
vendors to apply to sell at the West’s
only Swiss-Bavarian cultural festival
Sept. 29-Oct. 2.
Alpenfest, which is held in Joseph at
the Joseph Rodeo Grounds, is asking for
volunteers to pour beer and wine, pro-
vide kitchen and meal service and per-
form various logistical and safety duties.
Each volunteer gets a free admission
ticket and a bratwurst sandwich.
The 42nd edition of the festival will
feature The Polkatones dance band,
the Tirolean Dancers of Oregon, Swiss
yodeler Shelby Imholt, accordionist Toby
Hanson and alphorns.

LEARN ABOUT THE NIGHT SKY
BAKER CITY — Learn about astronomy
at the next session of the Baker Commu-
nity Sciences & Arts Lecture Series on
Thursday, Aug. 26.
“The Casual Observer’s Guide to the
Night Sky” will be presented by Ciera
Partyka-Worley and Casey Howard from
Boise State University. The talk starts at
6 p.m. in OTEC’s conference room, 4005
23rd St. Attendance is free.
Topics include stargazing, astronomy
with a telescope, naked eye astronomy,
the planets and moon, and a look at Jupi-
ter and Saturn.

MAKE A PAINTED BARN QUILT
AT CROSSROADS
BAKER CITY — Crossroads Carnegie
Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave., is again
offering barn quilt painting workshops,
and there are several options.
Participants can choose a one-day

materials are supplied. Cost is $100
members or $150 nonmembers.
Another choice is a two-day work-
shop where students make a square
that measures four feet by four feet.
Cost is $172 members or $258 non-
members.

THE TWO J.D.S TEAM UP IN
PENDLETON
PENDLETON — An evening of music
and spoken word will feature J.D. Kindle
and J.D. Smith.
AUG. 24�31, 2022
Kindle will unveil some new songs
and Smith will read from his poetry. In
addition, Gabrielle Bedolla will perform
movements of Mendelssohn’s “Viola
Sonata” with accompaniment by Emily
Muller-Cary.
The Two J.D.s is Friday, Aug. 26,
7 p.m. at Pendleton Center for the Arts,
214 N. Main St. There is no set admis-
sion charge. People are invited to enjoy
pizza and an evening of artistic expres-
sion. Donations will be accepted on
behalf of Bedolla, who will use it toward
tuition to study music at Eastern Wash-
ington University.

END-OF-SUMMER FIREWORKS
SHOW AUG. 27
BOARDMAN — The Boardman Com-
munity Night Out off ers people a chance
to visit with fi rst responders and their
neighbors. The event is held in collab-
oration with the Boardman Chamber of
Commerce’s end-of-summer fi reworks
celebration.
Everyone is invited to bring blankets,
lawn chairs and a picnic to enjoy a relax-
ing evening by the river. The free event
is Saturday, Aug. 27, beginning at 6 p.m.
at Boardman Marina Park. The fi reworks
display will illuminate the sky over the
Columbia River at 9 p.m.
