Grief support programs start in September STANFIELD — People experiencing loss are encour- aged to mark their calen- dars for upcoming programs through GriefShare. A special one-time session, Loss of a Spouse, is Sunday, Sept. 11, 3-5 p.m. at Stan- fi eld Baptist Church, 310 E. Wheeler Ave. Those griev- ing the death of a spouse are encouraged to attend the free seminar. Also, a 13-week Grief- Share support group offers participants additional tools as they navigate the loss of a loved one. On Aug.10, 2022, Margaret Melinda Buwalda passed away in the comfort of her home due to complications of congestive heart failure at the age of 74. She was often known as Mel and her personal favorite “Nana'.” Mel is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ronald Buwalda, and their beloved overweight “teacup” chihuahua, Maggie Sue; her four children, David Bailey, Shirlan Bailey McKay (J.T.), Daina Bailey Srofe (Chris) and Darla Bailey Hunt; her sister and best friend, Joyce Jones; sisters-in-law, Barbara Christley (Mike), Patty Buwalda, Francine Sather; brother-in-law, Burt (Delphi) Buwalda; her granddaughters, Jessica, Laci, Makenzie (Tanner), Ashleigh (Casey), Jordan, Bailey and Destenee; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Melinda was on March 15, 1948, in Pendleton, Oregon. She was raised in Echo, and she created a wonderful life in the area. She loved camping, playing cards, riding four-wheelers and spending time with her family. Michael ‘Mike’ John Hug October 31, 1953 - August 13, 2022 Michael “Mike” John Hug of Hermiston was born Oct. 31, 1953, in La Grande, Oregon, the son of Russell and Laura (Schaffer) Hug. He passed away in Kennewick, Washington, on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022, at the age of 68. Mike grew up on his family ranch near Summerville, Oregon, and attended schools in nearby Imbler. He graduated from Imbler High School in the class of 1971. After high school, he attended Eastern Oregon University for two years. He then took some time to travel and visited Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii. Upon returning to Oregon, he owned and operated a wood stove business in Elgin, Oregon, for several years. He moved to Hermiston in the mid-1980s and has lived in the Hermiston and Umatilla areas since that time. He worked as a manager for Coast to Coast (which later became Ace Hardware) in Hermiston for nearly 25 years. Mike married Mary Woodard in Hermiston, Oregon, on Dec. 7, 1985, and from this union two children, Marci and Anthony, were born. The couple divorced after 17 years of marriage. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, riding dirt bikes and ATVs, taking trips to Wallowa Lake and spending time with his grandkids. He was a member of Relay for Life in Hermiston and the Hermiston Rotary. Survivors include his daughter, Marci Murray; son, Anthony (Chey-Anne) Hug; grandchildren, Morgyn Murray, Brooklyn Cowan and Casen Hug; brother, David Hug; sister, Karen Hug; and several nieces and nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at the Burns Mortuary Chapel, 685 W. Hermiston Ave., Hermiston, Oregon.
