Sherman County Fair
sews up homegrown fun
By TAMMY

East Oregonian
MORO — While there
might not be a big and
glitzy midway, the Sher-
man County Fair has plenty
to see and do. The event is
Aug. 23-27 at the Sherman
County Fairgrounds, 66147
Lone Rock Road, Moro.
“As a fair board, we’ve
tried to make an effort to
make the fair a fun place to
come,” Betsy von Borstel, a
fair board member, said.
With a theme of Sew It,
Grow It & Show It!, it show-
cases FFA and 4-H youth
projects, as well as open class
entries. People are invited
to enjoy an old-fashioned
county fair that celebrates the
talents and lifestyles of the
people who reside in Sher-
man County.
Fair admission is free. In
addition, there is no charge
for special activities, includ-
ing live entertainment.
However, fair board secre-
tary Tania Nelson encour-
ages people to bring their
wallets as a handful of food
vendors will be on hand and a
beer garden will be available.
“We try to host events like
the demolition derby, music
and the rodeo and not require
people to pay,” von Borstel
said. “We want everyone to
be able to come and enjoy
themselves.”
Also, held in conjunction
with the Sherman County
Historical Society, there
is a vintage farm equip-
ment showcase. It will be on
display throughout the week.

Patricia ‘Pat’ Spence
February 23, 1933 - August 7, 2022
Pat was a homemaker, wife, mother,
grandmother, sister and aunt. She left this
world Aug. 7, 2022, after a brief illness at
the age of 89 years.
Pat was born to Erick and
Maude (Fenno) Tetzloff on
Feb. 23, 1933, in Hunter,
North Dakota, and was the
youngest of four daughters.
She was baptized at the
German Lutheran Church
and later confirmed at the
Methodist Church in Hunter.
Upon moving to Oregon
at the age of 12, she became
a member of the Pioneer
Methodist Church. Her faith
in God was always important
to her.
She graduated from
McLoughlin High School in Milton-
Freewater with the class of 1952. Her love
of music and her talented singing voice
was passed down from her grandmother,
Cora Fenno. Involved in choir all through
high school, she was a member of the
Crimson and Black choir as well as the
Mixed Ensemble choir. She was called
upon to sing solos at church, weddings and
clubs.
She married the love of all lifetimes, Ed
Spence, on Nov. 22, 1963, in Idaho. They
both brought children into the marriage
and added a son a year later to make it a
totally blended family.
Pat was a talented homemaker having
taught herself to sew, mending clothes
for eight kids and making dresses from
patterns made her a talented seamstress.
There wasn't anything she couldn't sew,
and up until two weeks ago, still wanted
her sewing machine nearby.
She enjoyed time in the kitchen,
creating large meals for the family and
teaching her kids to cook as well. She was
great at baking and making pies, breads
and cookies, which were waiting when we
got out of school. She even made a pretty
decent fruitcake. She enjoyed canning and
pickling and her efforts won blue ribbons
in her family's hearts. Dill pickles were
her specialty, Russ would eat them by the
jarful.
Pat was also a voracious reader,
something she passed on
to her kids. Over the last
40-plus years, she owned
enough books to open her
own store.
After Ed retired, they
became yard sale specialists,
going to as many as possible
and having huge sales of
their own. In 1987, they
purchased a cabin and land
on Tollgate which gave them
many, many years of fun
and relaxing times. Mom
and her sister, Leona, helped
decorate the cabin with all
the amenities of home so well that it wasn't
just any cabin, it was a home.
Mom was happiest when she was
making dad happy and they spent a
significant amount of time traveling to
Idaho for family reunions, Wallowa to sell
jewelry and especially Jackpot Nevada.
Pat's funeral service will be at 11 a.m.
on Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Wesley United
Methodist Church in Milton-Freewater,
Oregon. Viewing begins at 9 a.m. with
a burial service at the Milton-Freewater
Cemetery following the funeral.
Pat is survived by son, Jeff Moon;
daughters, Toni Shattenberg (Bill) of
Alaska, Cris Sichmeller (Bob) of South
Dakota; sons, Edward Spence (Lidia)
and Robin Spence of Idaho and Rick
Spence (Connie) of Walla Walla; as well
as 28 grandchildren and numerous great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, Erick and Maude; sisters, Cora,
Leona and Carol; husband, Ed Spence;
sons, Russ Moon and David Spence; and
former husband, Max Moon.
Arrangements are with Munselle-
Rhodes Funeral Home of Milton-
Freewater. To leave an online condolence,
