Old-fashioned fair coming to Wallowa County

ENTERPRISE 4 <Splish, Splash, Barn-
yard Bash= is the theme of the Wallowa
County Fair, Aug. 5-13, at the Wallowa
County Fairgrounds, 668 NW First St.
Admission is free.
On a walk through Cloverleaf Hall,
open to the public beginning at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 10, a visitor will see
everything from baskets, ober art, jewelry
and leatherwork to hand-sewn clothing,
painting, photography, fruit and
vegetables.
Events for the old-fashioned county
fair kick of with the junior rodeo at 9 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6. All-
Around Boy and All-Around Girl will each
win a saddle.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, local youngsters
will show their well-coifed, faithful ca-
nines in the 4-H dog show. Action starts
at 9 a.m. Obedience and showmanship
contests will be staged.
On Sunday, Aug. 7, the 4-H horse show
gallops into the spotlight beginning at
noon. Dressage and jumping are among
the competitions as young equine enthu-
siasts display their Stetson spirit.
On Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 8-9, the
4-H horse show starts at 8 a.m. The horse

awards program concludes festivities in

On Wednesday, Aug. 10, Cloverleaf
Hall opens to the public for a look at
traditional handmade and homegrown
exhibits at 10 a.m. The open class baked
goods competition ofers $25 Ida Hillock
Memorial Awards in both the one-crust
and two-crust pie divisions.
Livestock weigh-ins run most of
the afternoon and evening: beef, 1:30-
3:30 p.m.; sheep and goat, 3:30-4:30 p.m.;
swine, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Small animal check-
in is at 6:30 p.m.
Team roping shows of the best of the
Old West Wednesday, Aug. 10, and Friday,
Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. For more information,
call Tio Simmons at 541-398-2288.
On Thursday, Aug. 11, judging of
market animals will culminate at 6:30 p.m.
Grand champion market classes will
crown winners in beef, goat, sheep and
swine.
On Friday, Aug. 12, the penultimate day
of the fair, the small animal show begins at
8:30 a.m. as will swine showmanship. Beef
showmanship will begin at 10:30 a.m., and
sheep and goat showmanship will begin
at 3 p.m. All-around showmanship will
take place at 6:30 p.m.
The fair ends Saturday, Aug. 13,
with Family Day. An awards program at
8:30 a.m. kicks of festivities. Peewee
showmanship follows at 10:30 a.m. for
pre-4-H kids (younger than fourth grade)
with ribbons and $1 cash awards for each
participant.
Games on the Grass and Balloon
Scramble ofer a chance to decompress
starting at 11 a.m. Highlights include a
wheelbarrow race, three-legged race,
water balloon toss and an egg and spoon
race. Participants will capture a balloon
from the herd released and pop it for
a surprise. The FFA barbecue starts at
1 p.m.
Proving this is blue-ribbon bull country,
the fair concludes with the 4-H/FFA Fat
Stock Sale beginning at 3 p.m. Bidders
from the community will ofer top dollar
to reward youngsters for a year9s worth of
work.
