December 16, 1941 - July 7, 2022
With great sadness, we report Victoria
Nystrom Pearson Bafus died suddenly of
natural causes at her home in Colorado
Springs, Colorado, Thursday, July 7, 2022.
She was born Dec. 16, 1941,
to LaVerne Enoch Pearson
and Martha Theodora Swaf-
ford Pearson in Pendleton,
Oregon.
The youngest of three
girls, Vicki lived her ear-
ly life at home at 303 N.W.
Furnish Ave., in Pendleton.
She attended grade school
and high school at Pendle-
ton, making many valued
and permanent friends. The
day before her death, she
was planning on a trip with
several friends from high school.
With her siblings, she worked with her
dad at the Pearson Juniper Canyon sheep
and cattle ranch on the Columbia River rid-
ing horseback herding cattle and helping
brandings. She participated in the Pearson
eight-day cattle drive each year herding the
cattle from Juniper Canyon to the summer
ranges above Palmer Junction in Union
County. This revered event was popular
with many of the locals who helped. It was
one of the last of the authentic cattle drives
of its time.
As a top cowgirl and stunningly attrac-
tive, in 1959 Vicki overcame all competi-
tion to win queen of the Pendleton Round-
Up and after that, Miss Rodeo Oregon.
Topping that, she was the first Oregonian
to win the title of Miss Rodeo America.
She is not listed as during her reign she
forfeited her title by marriage.
In 1959, Vicki entered the University
of Washington and pledged Delta Gamma.
Dropping out of school, she married Phil
Beman April 16, 1960, and lived in many
different areas of the U.S. They had one
son, Michael. After she divorced in 1971,
she moved to California where she lived
with her sister and studied film directing
and voiceover at Foothill College in Los
Altos Hills.
On Oct. 3, 1974, she married Robert
G. Bafus. They lived many
years on the Bafus ranch
outside Pendleton. During
those years she worked at
the Byers Avenue Medical
Clinic and Eastern Oregon
Correctional Institution in
Pendleton. Later they moved
to Pullman, Washington.
Robert G. Bafus died Aug.
5, 2016. In the last several
years, she lived in Colorado
Springs, Colorado, with son,
Mike.
Vicki
dearly
loved
her son, stepchildren, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She frequently visited with them as a friend
and confidante in deep conversations. Like
others of the Pearson family, she was not
hesitant to fully express her opinions. She
also dearly and protectively loved her an-
imals.
Vicki was preceded in death by her par-
ents and her two husbands. She is survived
by her two sisters, Joan Pearson Corley,
Linda Pearson (Robert) Mautz; and numer-
ous Leland and Mautz nieces and neph-
ews; son, Michael Beman; grandchildren,
Brittany (Jeremy) Dantoni, Amy (Travis)
Paulk, and Jacob Beman; and greatgrand-
child, Madison Dantoni. She is also sur-
vived by her stepchildren, Kathi (Steve)
McMillan, Kim (Mike) Welling, and Rob
(Renae) Bafus; and numerous step-grand-
children and step-great-grandchildren.
Finally, Vicki is survived by her animals
Gay, Nelson and Hissy.
Vicki will be entombed at Olympic Me-
morial Gardens in Tumwater, Washington,
July 22, 2022, at 1 p.m. Remembrances
and donations to The Oregon Humane So-
ciety.
Joe William Taylor
December 17, 1932 - June 22, 2022
Joe Taylor, a true old-time
cowboy and longtime resident of
Heppner, Oregon, passed away
June 22, 2022, in Portland Oregon,
at the age of 89. A celebration of
life will be held at The Heppner
Elks Lodge on Thursday, July 21
at 1 p.m.; potluck to follow.
Joe was born in Filer, Idaho, to
Hedwig Kaeser and Joe H. Taylor.
Joe spent his growing-up years in Bruneau, Idaho, with
his parents and sister, Barbara. He always had high
interests in guns, rodeos, anything to do with cowboys
or the wild west. In fact, when he was a teenager he
and a friend were playing quick draw and Joe got shot
in the arm.
During and after high school, he worked as a
farmhand until he enlisted in the Army in 1953. He
spent two years in the Army; in Boise Idaho, then
stationed at Hanford. After being discharged from
the Army, he spent 30-plus years as a ranch hand in
the Heppner area and in his free time spent his biggest
interest riding bareback and saddle bronc in rodeos
across the United States and had much success.
During that time, he married Janet McGowan
in 1979 and had a child together, Crysti Taylor. In
1990, he got a job with the Morrow County Road
Department, which he then spent 20 years working for
until he retired. After retirement, he spent his free time
relaxing, traveling, camping, hunting, gold mining
and anything to do with rodeoing. He won his last belt
buckle for bareback champion in Nevada at the age of
76! He was always an active participant when it came
to helping out at the Round-up yearly and never missed
walking in the Westward Ho! Parade. Until about five
years ago, he was known for walking 7-10 miles every
day, rain or shine, in his cowboy boots and cowboy hat!
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Janet; mother
and father; and sister, Barbara.
Survivors include his daughter, Crysti Taylor; and
granddaughters, Elissa and Ariona; and other family
and friends.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions in
Joe’s memory can be made to the Oregon Trail Pro
Rodeo or Morrow County Fairgrounds.
