Dale was born Dale Jay Bayer
in Burbank, California, to Margaret
Enyeart and John Bayer. As an adult,
Dale was adopted by his stepfather
and changed his surname to Wendt.
Dale graduated high school from
Newport Beach Harbor High. He
spent his teenage years surfing in
Southern California and Mexico.
Dale received his B.S. and M.A.
in Agricultural Sciences from the two California Poly-
technic State universities. He taught agriculture at Blue
Mountain Community College, Pendleton, Oregon, for
33 years. Dale also studied in Seattle for several years to
become a coffee roaster.
While in his 20s, Dale lived and worked in the Philip-
pine Islands for six years. The first two years he was with
the Peace Corps. This experience began a lifelong love of
travel that broadened his perspective of agriculture, his-
tory and the human condition. Dale was a man with a big
heart, and he is missed.
Dale is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judy
Mayfield; son, Ash Wendt; daughter, Amber Coyne; and
four grandsons, Jordan, Oliver, Owen and Joseph.
A neighborhood memorial gathering was held at the
home he loved in Pendleton, Oregon, on June 18. His
ashes were scattered in the ocean in a beautiful celebra-
tion of life off Cayucos Pier on July 3 by a plaque that
reads “smell the sea, and feel the sky, let your soul and
spirit fly.” Dale’s spirit can now drink coffee, surf and
grow plants throughout eternity.
For a rememberance, please give to the Alzheimer’s
Association or a similar organization to help find a cure.
