Vikings:

He attended Eastern
Washington University, but
did not play football.
“I’ve been coaching
football and basketball on
and off my whole career,”
Sipe said.
The Vikings are going
to team camp Monday,
July 11, at Eastern Oregon
University, La Grande,
and will get four days of
instruction.
“I’m really looking
forward to it,” Sipe said.
Umatilla will play in
the tough 2A Blue Moun-
tain Conference again this
season with the likes of
Heppner, Weston-McE-
wen, Grant Union and
Stanfi eld. All 2A teams will
play nine-man football this
season.
“That’s going to be
interesting,” Sipe said.
“I had to do quite a bit of
A11
homework on this. I sat
down with Dan and Trent
(Durfey) and picked their
brains. We will still play an
11-man game with Tri-Cit-
ies Prep (out of Pasco).”
The Vikings return
quarterback Kade Sala-
manca and defensive back
Javier Jaime.
“Kade is a great kid
and has a good head on his
shoulders,” Sipe said. “A lot
of kids follow him. Javier
is another returning player
who loves football and is a
silent leader.”
Sipe and his staff will
treat the team to a college
game Sept. 17 when Carroll
College visits EOU. They
will get to see Trent Durfey
play for Carroll.
“We travel all over for
robotics,” Sipe said. “We
have kids who have never
been in elevators. We have
kids who have never been
close to a college football
game. I’m excited to see
how focused the college
kids are, and hopefully

Hermiston won the 10-12 state Little League softball title Sunday, July 10, 2022, with a 9-8 victory over Bend South in Med-

and got out of the innings.”

state with a 9-3 win over
Del Norte on Friday, then
followed with a pair of wins
Saturday — 11-8 over South
Beaverton, and 7-1 over
Bend South.
“Our ace pitcher (Lillian
Rood) pitched Saturday and
she ran out of innings to
pitch today,” Rood said.
Over the fi rst three games,
Lillian Rood struck out 34
of the 61 batters she faced,
and had an ERA of .447. She
allowed just four hits, and the
team backed her with stellar
defense.
Venoy also hit a solo
in-the-park home run in the
win over South Beaverton.
Over the past t wo
seasons, Hermiston has just
one postseason loss — in last
year’s state title game to NE
Portland.
“This is redemption for the
girls who were here last year,”
Rood said. “They are stoked
to go down to regionals.”
