He joined older sister, Peggy. He grew up in Pilot Rock where he was active in student council, band, choir and sports, especially basketball, football and track. He was nicknamed “Golden Toe Wyatt” for the high school football team in 1958. The next spring, he set the school record for the 120-yard high hurdles and also placed first at the state track meet. His high school record was not broken until 1970. After graduating with the class of 1959, he attended Moler Barber College in Portland. After receiving his license, he worked in Portland and Pendleton before buying his own shop in Pilot Rock. He cut many a head of hair over the course of the rest of his life. Also, as a young man, Fred was active in the JayCees and the town planning commission. His hobbies included calf roping in local rodeos and driving stock cars at the Pilot Rock racetrack. Fred married Patricia Irene Kucera on June 16, 1962. Three children followed: Jennifer in 1963, Wendy in 1964 and Eric in 1971. In 1974, the family moved to the Willamette Valley, first to Harrisburg then Junction City and Springfield. The final landing spot was outside of Lebanon. Fred worked in farming and running custom sheep for various people and himself. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children by example. He also sheared tens of thousands of sheep over the years, spending many summers on the southern coast of Oregon, especially Langlois. A fond highlight was when he and Patty were invited to shear on a ranch in Hawaii in 1986. In 2003, Fred and Patty moved back to the family ranch after his father’s death. Fred picked up where he left off, Milton-Freewater (Linda Hall, 541-938-5531). Pilot Rock Fire District, 7 p.m., fire department, 415 N.E. Elm St., Pilot Rock (541- 443-4522). BIRTHS supporting Rockets sports by attending many football and basketball games. He ran about 40 head of cattle on the ranch. He served on the Pilot Rock Fire Board for many years. Summers included trips to the south coast for shearing and visiting the grandchildren who lived there. He was 73 when he retired from shearing, sort of. He was the third generation of shearers in the family and inspired a fourth and fifth generation to continue the family legacy. Fred was very friendly and hardly knew a stranger. He often ran into people he knew wherever he went, often to the dismay of the people with him. After a series of unusual physical symptoms, Fred was diagnosed with ALS. He was able to celebrate with Patty their 60th anniversary on June 16 before passing away June 27. He is survived by his wife, Patty, and his sister, Peggy Jamison, of Burns, Oregon. He leaves behind daughter, Jennifer (Gary) Miller, of Hermiston, Oregon; daughter, Wendy (Charlie) Valentine, of Langlois, Oregon; and son, Eric (Kandi) Wyatt, also of Langlois. He was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Leah, and aunts and uncles. The funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 12, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Pilot Rock. Interment will immediately follow at Skyview Cemetery. Donations may be made for ALS research, Vange John Memorial Hospice in Hermiston, Oregon, or a charity of your choice that would honor Fred. September 14, 1943 - April 15, 2022 Norman Wallace McDonald (Wally) passed away on Friday, April 15th, 2022, in Walla Walla, Washington. Family attended a private burial in the Milton-Freewater cemetery. Family and friends will hold a memorial service on Sunday, July 31, 2022, from 2-5 p.m. at the Pioneer Park Garden Center, 940 E. Alder St., Walla Walla). We welcome all who would like to celebrate Wally’s life and share memories, songs and stories as he was fond of doing. Wally was born on Sept. 14, 1943, at Walla Walla General Hospital to Norman William and Margaret Louise (Czyhold) McDonald, lifelong residents of Walla Walla. After graduating from Walla Walla High School, Wally went on to attend community college in the Tri-Cities and school for photography in Berkeley, California. As a part of his pioneering mission as a member of the Baha'i faith, he lived in Ecuador for two years serving the community and teaching local people about health and wellness, business and farming practices. After returning home, Wally and his friend, David Hiatt, owned a motorcycle shop for a time. Later, he owned and operated Hydraulic Industrial Supply in Walla Walla. He sold the company to B. Barer & Sons where he worked in management to assist in the transition before moving on to supply parts to farms with NAPA Hardware. Wally was a man of many talents, and pursued career opportunities of interest to him. For example, he spent a few years writing and performing radio commercials for the local radio station and enlisted his daughters to help him to create humorous and unique ads. Wally married Catherine Susan (Anderson) McDonald in September 1982. They had two daughters together, Marya and Anna. Wally and Cathy shared love for family, music and community. Wally played many musical instruments including guitar, clarinet, piano and accordion. For several years, he enjoyed playing upright bass as part of a local bluegrass ensemble. Wally and his wife, Cathy, joined a classical chorus in Pendleton where he added his beautiful deep baritone to the choir. Wally worked to support the local schools by assisting with fundraising activities, particularly in Athena, where he and Cathy raised their daughters. Wally was one of the founders of the local Baha'i community and was a devout member of the Baha'i faith. He found joy in sharing his interests with others. Wally was passionate about his faith, an excellent cook and loved to talk about his Scottish heritage. He had a unique ability to share a fun tune or interesting story to brighten the lives of those around him. Wally was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, and both of his parents. He is survived by his two daughters, Marya (McDonald) Ouro Gbeleou and her husband, Tchassanty, of San Mateo, California, and Anna McDonald of San Francisco; and a son from his first marriage, Andrew McDonald of Spencer, Indiana. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Christine Watson of Vancouver, Washington, and Deborah Hunsaker and her husband, Trevor, of Burbank, Washington. Wally is survived by four grandchildren from Marya, Ali, Abbas, Al-Nur and Ashraf; 10 step- grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Jeremy, Mark, Roxanne, Maggie and Emily from Christine; and Trevor Jacob, Michael and Kaylynn from Deborah; and one step- great-grandchild, Lucas, from Michael and his wife, Chelsie. Wally has two surviving cousins, Maria (McDonald) Grago, of Palm Springs, and her husband, Glenn, and Katherine (Czyhold) Habedank. He is also survived by David Hiatt, a brother in faith, business partner in several ventures and lifelong best friend. Wally cared deeply about his family, friends, and contributing to the betterment of the world through pure and goodly deeds. The family requests that any donations in his honor be sent to the Mona Foundation (www.monafoundation.org).
