CommuniCare was started by Harold and Arlene Schnitzer 25 years ago with the dream of
empowering teens to become active citizens and has grown to serve sixty student groups
under the leadership of their son, Jordan Schnitzer. Over the course of the school year,
students learn about important community issues, evaluate nonprofits doing amazing work,
and decide which to fund. It has been our great privilege to work alongside inspiring teachers
and students from the North Coast to Eastern Oregon. The passion and commitment of
these young people should give each of us tremendous hope for the future.
“CommuniCare has sparked a light in my fellow classmates’
hearts. When we were building our mission statement, I was
able to hear the debates and discussions shared about our
community, and it was so inspiring to hear our classroom
fill with chatter for the concern of our community.”
